August 18th, 2018: Two days ago Liam Payne tweeted in support of the Greenpeace campaign aiming at holding the food industry accountable for producing palm oil at the expense of forests. Liam’s tweet links to the Greenpeace page containing an animated short movie on the problem of deforestation. The short animated film called ‘Rang-tan” was made by creative agency Mother, directed by Salon Alpin, produced by Oscar-winning Passion Animation Studios, and is narrated by Emma Thompson. It shows an orangutang in a little girl’s room; the orangutang explains that he had to leave his forest because humans were destroying it. The page with the short movie also contains a petition that Greenpeace is urging everybody to sign. The petition is to stop companies from producing palm oil by deforestation of endangered regions.
Greenpeace has estimated that the rainforest area lost in Indonesia in the last 20 years is the same size of the UK and that this has caused the Bornean orangutan population to fall in number to almost half in the last 16 years. While food producers have pledged not to use “dirty” palm oil, the industry, unfortunately, hasn’t made that committed yet with the result that deforestation hasn’t slowed down.
The first palm oil alert Greenpeace released was on March 31st, 2017. In this alert, Greenpeace warned traders and buyers against doing business with a company called Goodhope without verification that it was complying with its new sustainability policy. Indeed, Greenpeace had found that despite Goodhope announcing this new policy, in reality, the company was violating the law by working without proper permits and was continuing deforestation.
By partnering with celebrities like Emma Thompson and Liam Payne, Greenpeace hopes to spread its petition on social media and get as many people as possible to “tell big companies to stop using palm oil from rainforest destroyers”.
