to put on my pretentious fanfic writer hat for a couple of minutes:
i wanted to portray dave as the more reserved conservative character that he is, but also being the voice of reason because he’s right, and dave has the most to lose by changing history as well if that were actually happen.
john meanwhile i wrote as not truly considering the consequences of his actions and trying to justify them without going into the meat of why he feels that way. john feels the general empty rage of the viewer and will direct it at the next easy target, as is john. and the easiest target right now is caliborn, who everyone justifiably hates.
i liked writing rose most though. how fucking high do you have to be, to be the Seer of Light and think that going back in time to fight caliborn would be a good idea. i wrote rose as having a more nihilist approach to time travel, not particularly caring either way. rose has always had a lot of hubris even in the ending. but she’s also correct; skaia has a terrifying status quo, and this trip is only going to help maintain it.
roxy meanwhile gives no fucks as why would she if she isnt still stressed about all the GAME OVER characters dying. this entire fight was also an idea roxy agreed with when john suggested it. but dirk is another dave. dirk also didnt lose any friends in this version of the journey so he feels kind of guilty that other people died in the game and therefore feels like he cant get involved too much in the debate. jane and jake have no brain cells. karkat has one brain cell. karkats brain cell is too unconfident to get involved. jade refuses to use her brain cells. calliope is irrelevant.kanaya is kanaya
I may agree PB is a fascist, but she was justified in the Wizards Only episode. Starchy and Jake were kind of defending non scientific medicine, and it's shown in many episodes wizards are highly secretive of their actions, which allows for some discrimination against non wizards, shady dealings, the big ego of the grand wizard, the ineffectual signs in each business, and madness that is common in all wizards. PBs mistake is that she doesnt allow her citizens to study science.
i like the discourse that surrounded this episode a lot. it was back when the creators would get involved sometimes too.
