"There was some discussion of mixing and matching."

This is quite fun! And if you were in fandom (any fandom tbh) circa the 2010s, you'll know it was common to... remove or otherwise handle the female romantic love interest, usually by making her a harpy or hag or whatever so our brave gay ship can sail happily with no guilt. This is a very tasty inverse of this! The reversal of roles (the queer men chasing the woman, the feeling of guilt by said men because they weren't willing to be fully honest (to themselves mostly), the rejection is by the woman, etc) makes this a lot of fun.
Also just good romance (not quite smut unfortunately) ♡

3 years ago, I made a post about incogneat-oh's best fic. I hoped to make a series, because I LOVE reccing older authours!
Better late than never, here's part two. (And maybe we'll call this post about jamjar part 1.5?) This time, we're focusing on glymr and iesika!
Both of these authours are amazing on their own, and they've also worked together several time to create exceptional works. Most of the fic are romantic, with gorgeous characterization. They also really respect side characters, and do some amazing exploration of AUs. (Prepare for grieving, though. Neither authour is afraid of tackling the fallout of DC's murder-happy tendencies.)
Kings Among Runaways (starting with Looking Out For The Little Guy), by glymr and iesika - Jason takes a 'homeless' Tim under his wing. They survive on the streets, fall in love, and eventually get entangled with Batman.
(Warnings for underage sex, referenced sexual abuse/child prostitution, child abuse, and neglect. Possibly other stuff, my most recent reread was a few years ago.) The WORLD these two authours build! The side characters! The history! What a work of art!
Perennial, by glymr - the Drakes 'moved' to Smallville when Tim was younger. Which means that Tim used to spend a lot of time alone in the country, with nothing to do but explore Lex Luthor's childhood home. Eventually, he started helping out the Kents. But when they take in their 'nephew' Connor, Tim's excuses to come over start disappearing.
(Warnings for underage sex and temporary main character death.) Really good. Like this has a lot of really fluffy romance, which is usually my kryptonite, and I've still reread it at least 6 times!
Peek Not Through a Keyhole, by iesika - this is original flavour Bernard, from long before the reboot. Original Bernard is SO SO GOOD, you guys! He starts off wanting to know all the mysteries of one Tim Drake. They turn out to be ... a lot. Maybe too much.
(Warnings for referenced death.)
You Are Cordially Invited, by glymr - Young Justice has a reunion celebration. But this is actually a story about taking care of Red Robin, who isn't particularly easy to take care of. It's one of my favourite fic of all time.
Complicated Questions and Simple Answers, by iesika - Tim is trans. The second story, especially, really gives Alfred a chance to shine. The first one is about Bruce's less than stellar attempt to do right by his new kid.
(Warnings for accidental transphobia in the first fic.)
Never a Hero, by iesika - Ra's revived Jack Drake in an attempt to trap Tim. Jack decides to think about something outside of himself for once. Finally, someone puts Tim first. It makes me cry!
(Warnings for suicidal ideation, a WHOLE lot of deaths referenced, and some non-explicit gore and vomitting at the beginning.)
Inside my head like adversaries/Come wrestle me free/Clean from the war/Your heart fits like a key/Into the lock on the wall/I turn it over/I turn it over/But I can't escape/I turn it over/I turn it over
He’s dreamt before.
Processes, protocols, memory caches. All cycling through his consciousness in rest mode. Defragmenting and decluttering.
His dreams are usually clean and logical, at worst surreal landscapes. Re-experiencing the day’s events, cataloguing input. Analysing his emotions.
This is different.
It’s raining so hard he can barely see in front of him. His footsteps echo in the alley, brick walls and pothole-filled tarmac. Someone’s behind him. He can sense them, but he can’t make his body turn.
The rain slows to a drizzle, and he sees someone in front of him, walking further from him. He recognises the silhouette.
”Hank!”
Hank doesn’t stop, just keeps walking. He can’t hear Connor. He keeps moving further away.
”Hank, please, wait for me!”, Connor shouts, desperate.
Hank’s so far away he’s just a blurry form in the rain, and then he’s gone. It’s just Connor and the rain echoing against the brick.
And someone else. Someone behind him. Following him. Something cold slithers down his spine, afraid and paranoid.
He keeps walking, and the alley gets narrower and narrower. He’s looking for something, but he doesn’t know what.
He hears someone step into a puddle, only a few steps behind him, and finally his body obeys. He whirls around to see the glint of a rifle lit by echo of dim blue of lights far away.
And his own face, twisted with fury, staring down at him.
He sees the finger on the trigger twitch, the flash of the muzzle and-
He wakes up to his own scream, the sound torn from his throat, bursting from his wide open mouth, the tail of it glitching into an electronic screech.
Panicked, he scrambles up, and something moves next to him, something large, sending him stumbling, flailing, thirium pump rhythm irregular; one beat, skip, two beats, one beat, one beat, skip, three beats, skip-. He hears something shatter as he crashes to the floor, and he stays there on his knees, body quivering with tension like a coiled spring, trying to make sense of the pop-ups and error messages his system is throwing at him. Trying to shake the feeling of dread still clinging to him like a wet cloth.
He hears someone shouting, footsteps, and then strong hands grip his shoulders, hauling him upright, and he nearly punches the side of Hank’s head in before reality rushes in.
He’s kneeling by the sofa, Sumo standing uncertainly next to him and Hank, half-covered in the blanket Connor had kicked over him. There’s glass shards under Connor’s shins, gleaming blue from bleeding thirium.
He stands up, swaying and confused, glass crunching under his feet.
“Jesus, Connor, be careful,” Hank pleads, pushing him down on the sofa. “What the hell-"
Connor wraps his arms around Hank, clutching at him like a lifeline, the thud of Hank’s pulse rushed against his own.
They strike five beats, synchronised in the silence, and then Hank’s arms close around him, holding him secure like an anchor.

This is a love letter to Young Justice. It's also an exploration of how things had changed by late 2009, especially for Tim. He doesn't QUITE haunt the narrative, because he's still there, but it's a close thing!
There's so much love and care in this story. My first thought, whenever I think of it, is, "this is my favourite fic." Which PROBABLY isn't true. There are a LOT of fic I love. But it feels true.

Submitter's comment:
This classic series is raw and optimistic and realistic and ... look, it is so beautiful.
Teen Jason protects Tim ONCE, and somehow ends up with a new roommate. The two street kids ... live. They hang out with friends. They help out their friends' mom. They steal some stuff. (They fall in love.) They worry about each other, and are so grateful to have discovered each other, and I've reread the whole thing probably 5 times. Please, give yourself the gift of this series!
