I see a lot of criticism of the flaws in standardized intelligence scales esp re: cultural differences, racism etc. and I do want to say that that's extremely valid but I maintain that the biggest issue with IQ tests is that y'all keep calling them IQ tests.
Like, we calculate a whole lot of standardized scores in those, some of them sensitive to cultural and racial bias, some of them not. IQ is only one of those many scores, and if you want my opinion, perhaps the least interesting. Oftentimes that shit isn't even statistically acceptable! (meaning scores are too different to calculate a sensible average- because that's what IQ is: a mean of different, more precise scores). I tend to prefer not even giving the IQ unless it serves another purpose (i.e. letting the kid get aid from the state, raising their self-esteem, etc.)
So like, yes, IQ is totally overrated as a measure of intelligence. Yes, the definition of intelligence used in those tests is a little different from the usual definition of intelligence commonly used outside of cognitive psychology circles. Yes, those tests are flawed (and the impact of these flaws on the final conclusions totally depends on the psychologist's awareness btw that doesn't exist in a vacuum).
No, that does not mean that intelligence scales suck and are dumb and useless; they're pretty fucking useful for a whole lot of things actually. Well, as long as the professional administrating them isn't a moron, of course.
(Also those "IQ tests" that you see on the internet are just puzzles designed to make you feel smart when you solve them they have nothing to do with professional testing btw)
