Gio-ji, Arashiyama
Gio-ji is nestled within the northern parts of the Arashiyama neighborhood. the temple’s main attraction is its moss-covered grounds that is surrounded by a bamboo grove. the moss appears in its most vibrant colours, especially during summer. visitors pay an entrance fee to walk the grounds and admire the meticulously maintained moss and topiary. i for one appreciate the quiet temple grounds and while i admit not to be well versed in the topic of zen Buddhism, i sure can appreciate a good looking moss garden.
Kyoto
Kyoto is lovely. You get into the city (if, like me, you take the overnight bus) dropped off, a little (a lot) disorientated by the main station. I then took the metro – such a relief after Tokyo’s system – to a 15min walk away from my chosen hostel. I will admit now I spent the first day sleeping. Night buses do not agree with me.
