#gifs tutorial

thank you so much for liking my gifs! i am not the best person for tutorials, i'm usually shit at explaining but i can give you some basic pointers. i'm not super skilled with photosop, so i use the most basic settings to colour my gifs, like

luminosity / contrast

exposure

color balance

selective color

for example, for this george gif, i used the following settings (sorry my default language in photoshop is italian, i hope you're still able to understand it, the settings are the one i listed above, in order)

luminosity / contrast and exposure:

color balance (halftone and highlights, again not sure this is the right terminology in the english version):

selective color (i love giving some red tones to neutral colours, they usually make the gifs a lot more soft looking):

and these are my sharpening settings. i use smart sharpen -> amount 500 and radius 0,4, then i select gaussian blur

there's literally nothing else i do (mostly because i don't know how to use other settings), the only feauture i sometimes add is "curve", which i use in order to fix excessively yellow lighting. also colouring highly depends on the starting material, sometimes you have to use a lot of layers of colouring, others a couple would be enough (like luminosity and exposure). you can do many trials and see what method works better for you! there's no standard procedure for gif colouring.

i can suggest you these tutorials, they're super helpful if you're a beginner.

I’ve had some issues in the past where people have reposting my gifs without credit, i usually see that their posts end up gaining lots of likes (we’re talking 10k+) and they have not linked anything to my OG posts.

Anyone who makes gifs knows that these take time and effort to make. I dont consider myself strict with these rules, they’ve very basic and its just doing the bare minimum of showing respect for creators in fandoms.

How to give credit:

If you are uploading them to Twitter/X and pinterest, add the original link to your post. For example if you repost my gif onto twitter, you can put the link in the thread. NOT my @, the link.

Regular gifs with only few edits to them. This includes colouring and sharpening. Can you repost? Yes. Is credit required? No, but it would be appreciative.

Gifs that include gradients and text: here are 2 examples:

Hello! I'd like to introduce my GIF Making Demo! (Without sound, sorry!)

Here I show two ways to make GIFs. An absolutely FREE way and a way that does require some money.

This tutorial doesn't go into depth about the programs themselves, but it does show exactly what I do in each program.

I try not to handhold in this video. Feel free to pause, take notes, etc when watching, but I didn't slow things down or narrate (w/ text) every click I'm making.

The programs in the video: Bandicam (Screen Recording Software) (Free versions and Pro versions available) VSDC (Free Video Editing Software) (Pro version available, I think) Adobe Premiere Pro (Video Editing Software) (Paid Program)

Here is a list I used when finding free video editing programs.

While Bandicam does have a watermark (as seen in the video) I do show you how to remove it when making GIFs.

A few notes: I've only used VSDC today for this video. I have downloaded MANY a free video editing software and this one is by far the best. I did not mess too much with it, but I'd highly advise one to go through a manual, tutorials, and the like to find out all of its hidden features.

I'll admit, it is NOT very beginner-friendly and may have a bit of a learning curve. But if you know editing software or are tech-savvy, it'll be a breeze. One HUGE PLUS for this program is that it does not give your videos watermarks!!

My method is with Premiere Pro which is why I can move along so fast with it. If you need any assistance please reach out to me!

This is just my own method, so it is definitely not the "one true" method of GIF-making. If any other GIF makers have any other input, feel free to share! :D I've got post-nap brain so I'm sorry for my ramblings

COLORING/BRIGHTENING TUTORIAL [ requested by an anon ]

so i don’t think i got what anon wanted, but i had a bit of fun anyway. mind that i’m sick and coughing and my head is about to explode, so i may be a tad incomprehensible.

(as for sharpening, i mentioned the action i use here)

(all i use is brighten/contrast, hue/saturation, vibrance, selective color, levels, and sometimes curves about which you can read here )

1. ugly yellows

so i have this gif i want to brighten but also make it look more human than instagram-colored.

the one thing you want to do here is to play with saturation and its color ranges, then tone down everything, and then bring up and tone what you want. 

this is what i almost always do, sometimes i double the layer, sometimes i change the opacity to 70 or 50%. thanks to this your gif will be brightened but not as if a lamp just appeared in front of the person of the gif and made white dots on their face. it brightens everything evenly.

2. easy coloring

on this gif i have an easy job to do. i have blues, and blues, i think, are the easiest to play with.

what you wanna do here is basic brightening and then toning down everything. then bring up what you want to bring up. it’s important when you color gifs with people because without this you’ll orange or yellow the hell out of their faces if not careful. 

so brighten it, and then:

(changing the blending to ‘color’ allows you to color evenly, it kind of blurs the color instead of bringing it up pixelized much)

and duplicate the last layer

additionally, if you use hue/saturation, you can play with the blue:

3. blues blues plus saturation

in this one i can afford myself saturation. it’s also easy with a lot of blues, but it still has people in it. i find it the most difficult to partially color gifs with people in them.

4. so, uh. greens.

greens are the weirdest because you want to get them right. depending on a situation, the green will change. as for mysterio, we can go into the military-esque greens. if it was grass, we’d go for yellowish.

because the gif is already bright, i go down with the brightening layer’s opacity.

double the selective color layer, change the opacities of the SC layers to color.

WHAT YOU NEED

Photoshop: I will be using Photoshop CC 2018.

A High Quality Video: the better the quality the better the gif. Try to not use any video under 720p.

Hi ! This post is kinda the end of the answer to what anon previously asked about how I make my gifs. I wrote a full step-by-step tutorial for Photoshop users who’d like to learn how to do it. It’s my first time posting something like this so I apologize if there’s any confusion. My Photoshop is settled in French, but I requested a friend to screenshot the English version, hence the different gifs used in the screenshots. If there’s anything that’s missing or confusing, feel free to message me. Constructive criticism is always appreciated !

STEP 1 : First go to Photoshop. If you didn’t do it before, open the picture/edit you want to apply the gif to. Now that it’s done, go to File, Open and then go the gif you want to use, click and then it’s going to open the gif in Photoshop as a document.

STEP 2 : Then go to Window and select Timeline. Now in the zone down your work space, you can see the editing tool open on the deconstructed gif. On the right of it, you’ll see the menu icon (it looks like 4 little horizontal straight lines). Click on it and chose Select All Frames.

STEP 3 : Then go to the list of layers, on the far right. For this part, you want to be sure to select ALL of them. To do that, just click on the first layer and scroll to the last. Then you use SHIFT+Click and it will automatically select every layers in between. When it’s done, go back to the Timeline menu and click on Convert to Video Timeline.

STEP 4 : Now you go back to the upper part of your work space and select Filter. In the menu, choose Convert for Smart Filters. At this point you should get something that kind of looks like this :

Then you just drag the final gif layer you can see, onto the picture you want to use. You can also resize the gif layer as you want, it will not break it. If it appears with an all-black background, go the layers options and select Screen (my Photoshop is in french so it’s written as Superposition on the screenshot, but it’s the same option). You have to re-open the Timeline tool before going to STEP 5, so be sure that it’s running by clicking on Create Video Timeline, or the gif will crash when saved.

STEP 5 : You’re almost at the end ! Now you got to be sure the little grey thingy (sorry idk the english name for that haha) at the end of the timeline is positioned at the end of your gif layer. Sometimes it’s already well-positioned, sometimes it’s not. If it’s not, you just click and drag it to the right place. It might go from this :

and go back like this. See how it’s just at the tip end of the layer ? Do not worry if, unlike what you see on my screenshot, the layer of your picture doesn’t appear in the Timeline tool. It might be because the picture you’re working on is also open as the Background. It’s okay and doesn’t change anything to the process.

STEP 6 : Now that you’ve got everything settled, you got to save your work. So what you’re going to do is that you open File. You select Export and choose Save for Web (Legacy). It’s going to open a new window with lots of options around and the preview o your edit.

STEP 7 : See on the right and lower part of the window, there’s a category named Animation. Click on Looping Options and change it to Forever. This will ensure that your gif endlessly runs over you edit.

STEP 8 : Now, just to be sure, click on the little Play icon under Looping Options to admire your masterpiece ! Be sure to hit Save and voilà ! You’re done and on your road to master overlaying gifs on pictures. It might look a bit hard at first, but you will soon get the hang of it.
