What’s black, crawls, and has spikes all over?? A full-grown giant wooly bear! This is the common name for the larva stage of giant leopard moths (Hypercompe scribonia). These caterpillars curl up whenever they are attacked... or poked with a stick by some nerd in the woods 🤓 . . . My new friend was found on a sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua). And the 3rd picture is not mine! It’s from bugguide.net . . . #treetyoself #trees #plants #nature #natural #outdoors #forest #forestry #hiking #woods #treatyourself #treesofchattanooga #chattanooga #woolybear #giantleopardmoth #leopardmoth #catepillar #entomology #lepidoptera #sweetgum #bark #insects #creepycrawlies #larva (at Stringer's Ridge) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwK3mLCnwiJ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=vir0i16r9111
Video of Giant Leopard Moth! I'm so excited to have spotted it yesterday! ❤️
I see a Giant Leopard Moth about once every 2 to 3 years. While checking up on a spider yesterday, I came across this fantastic being. Surprises are the best when searching for bugs!
A few close-ups of the beautiful Giant Leopard Moth!

Where are you going!? TAKE ME TO YOUR SHIP!!
It has been really cold here so - I haven’t been able to get out and look for bugs much in the past 3 days or so. I looked around a bit, and came up with nothing. Even my Spiny Orb-weaver friends have split from their usual locations!!! (Sniffle… Just too cold). Temp got below freezing for several nights in a row, which is pretty rare for the part of Texas I’m in. So - here are two pics of a Giant Leopard Moth I came across about 4 or 5 years ago. Love the dashes of blue. Sorry the quality isn’t better, these were taken with an old iPhone.
(via "Woman with tiger lilies and giant leopard moth" Mounted Print for Sale by KnowingWonder) I wanted to do a drawing of a woman surrounded by flowers. A giant leopard moth completes the drawing.
