#ghost squid

Lynn stares down at Tawky blankly for a moment, which is an expression Billy is getting used to seeing on him, and then looks back up at Billy. He frowns a little. Billy smiles back encouragingly, trying not to do it too wide or anything. He’s still trying not to be overbearing here. 

Lynn still doesn’t seem very talkative, and Billy’s still not sure if it’s that he’s shy, or just needs to warm up to them a little, or maybe just doesn’t like to talk much. It’s fine either way, obviously, just all those things mean different approaches, so . . . 

Well, he’ll figure it out, Billy figures. He’s got time, as long as he’s patient and doesn’t rush and make Lynn feel uncomfortable or pressured. He just needs to respect Lynn’s feelings about all this and do what works for him. That’s the best way to handle it. 

AU In Which Everything Is The Same, But There's A Ghost Squid

On the heels of my last comic about Episode 7 (thank you so much for all the notes and lovely tags on that, you guys are the best!), here's another riff on Episode 7. I've always thought that Ricky Q's delivery of the line "...or your ship is haunted." is honestly hilarious. I know it's meant to be flippant and arrogant, but something about the way he says it just cracks me up. Anyway, in this AU Ricky Q has to reconcile himself to the existence of Frankie the Ghost Squid (Brian named them) who yes, might be haunting the ship, but is very polite about it.

Drawing these comics (even just the two that I've done so far) has been a really interesting exercise in realising that I don't actually have a clear mental image of any of the cast - even though I consider myself to be a pretty visual thinker normally - except for Sana. I'm not sure if that's because I spent more time picturing her when I wrote Good For Morale in order to think up and then describe her date outfit, or if it's because fanart of Sana tends to be, on the whole, pretty consistent in how she's depicted? But it becomes an interesting challenge to try and decide on an appearance for the other characters. I have endless fun with Krejjh, whom I now headcanon has a thing for both wrist and neck adornments (and in case you can't make it out, they are wearing a T-shirt with a dinosaur and the word 'DINO' on it, because dinosaurs!) but Ricky Q was a challenge. What kind of outfit would best sum up his smug fuckboi essence? Initially I thought of some kind of really idiotic "sneaky" outfit involving a black beanie and all-black attire, but he does work with a lot of criminal organisations, so he'd probably dress nicely to Show Them Who's Boss. And of course, he had to have a fedora. All of which was a "fun" challenge for my limited drawing skills, but persevere I did! (Even when I had to redraw the last panel because his face looked really weird, and then I obliterated the paper by rubbing it out too many times. This is also why his skin tone is more vivid in the last panel, because I forgot that I'd originally coloured him to be super pasty).

Problem with writing complex characters is that there's a lot going on! People can mess up but still be trying their best!! And I really enjoy how you write complex characters! Like, I feel that you do a good job of making it clear where they're coming from, even/especially when they messed up and are in the wrong. It's clear that Rosalie in particular is trying SO HARD to BE THERE for Carlisle and not push her issues onto him, but it's breaking her to hear her father try to wave away what happened. (Which is in turn breaking Carlisle's heart because he was there, he KNOWS what she went through and how hard she struggles, making her go through this again is THE WORST) So there's the personal trauma, plus Edward, who is supposedly the expert on knowing what people REALLY think and feel, being so adamant there is no room for doubt. I really would love to see Jasper participating in the conversation, because he's way more self-aware than Edward, and as such is way better at reading people. Knowing you're not a Saint but still trying hard to be a good person anyway is always fun and cool. I know part of why he's probably keeping his mouth shut is knowing everyone will believe Edward over him unless he's got some solid proof. Which... he can't get. And everyone is mostly just Loudly Upset and Deeply Convinced they're correct. But I want to know that Jasper knows that 1 Carlisle is deeply, DEEPLY fond of Aro, even with what all happened with Renesmée and 2 that Edward is off the deep end. I'm sure he knows the second one at least, which is nice! The little hints you drop of his character just make me want to read more about him! Not just here but in all your fics, I want to know how he feels about Edward going from weird-but-stable to rabid as soon as Aro gets within 100 yards of Carlisle. That said: that he's the one Renesmée's subconscious trusts most to guide her to the truth is INTERESTING!!!
