Roy lifts Ed all the time. When theyâre walking, when theyâre chatting with friends, when Ed has picked up a book and gotten so invested in it from the very first moment that he forgot to sit down or even move away from the bookshelf. Ed squawks and flails and pretends that he doesnât like having Royâs arms around his waist because he thinks itâs just about being manhandled, something heâll never admit to being into outside the bedroom.
One day, though, he asks Roy why the hell he does it and Roy looks at him and says, one hundred percent seriously, âI wanted to help you be even taller. I figured youâd enjoy it.â
Summary: Colonel Edward Elric is pleased to have snapped up the latest alchemical genius to join the military, but for reasons more than his abilities. Â And though Roy Mustang may be a looker, he's got an adorable awkwardness to him that Ed just wants to...
Well, eat up.
Notes: VERY VERY VERY VERY BELATED BIRTHDAY PRESENT FOR MY DARLING @gettibucket THAT TOOK FOR GODDAMN EVER TO FINISH BUT I HOPE U LIKE BB!!!!!
â
âBoss?â
Ed chewed on the end of the pen, the words vaguely penetrating his concentration as he stared at the capelet obnoxiously obscuring his vision.  His eyes narrowed slightly, and he wondered, if he asked to borrow itâŠ
âBoss.â
Ed finally tore his eyes away from that regrettably covered ass, removing the pen from his mouth and dragging his gaze over to Havoc, grimacing.
âWhat?â
Havoc glanced in the direction that Ed had just been ogling, raising an eyebrow and lowering his voice. Â âCould you be any more obvious?â
âProbably,â Ed deadpanned back, utterly unrepentant. Â âHave you seen him when he talks to me? Â I havenât seen someone trip over their own two feet so much since Elicia was learning to walk.â
Havoc rolled his eyes, and Ed muttered, âInsubordination!â Â This didnât save him from the file slapping down onto his desk, and with a sigh, Ed opened it.
âTime to get a different view of him, then. Â Also, your own damn secretary. Â Iâm tired of delivering papers for you.â
âItâs just âcause you look so good when you walk in,â Ed shot back without much force, skimming the papers. Â Idly, he wondered if it were his skill with alchemy or the laid-back nature of his team that had kept him from getting nailed with fraternization accusations in the past few years. Probably both. Â He clicked his tongue, then looked back up.
âHey, Mustang!â
The newest member of his team straightened from where he had been searching through the bookshelf, turning to face Ed, eyes wide at the force of the statement.
âColonel?â Â Mustang even saluted. Â Adorable.
Ed beckoned him over with two crooked fingers, raising an eyebrow.  For someone eight years Edâs senior, the man had a remarkably difficult time making eye contact with him.  And only him: Havoc, Fuery, Breda, Falman, Ross; Mustang seemed to be fine with them, but the moment he came within a few feet of EdâŠ
Like Ed had said. Â Not very subtle.
âIâve got some questions from the higher-ups about the history you provided. Sounds to me like youâve been everywhere.â Â He flicked through the folder. Â âI think they wanna know if youâve got connections or something. Â Know people there. Â East City in particular, apparently. Â Looks like you might be in the running for a special mission. Â Who the fuck knows?â
Mustang shifted in his seat, then glanced down at his knees, hands twisting in his lap. Â âI donât think I can be of much help there, sir. Â Iâve been to most places across Amestris, yes, but that was with my father. Â I grew up traveling with him, and we never stayed anywhere long. Â I would mostly stay in the hotel rooms we rented, and certainly never got a chance to speak with anyone.â
Ed glanced back down at the file, twirling a bang around an automail finger. Â That certainly explained plenty. Â No wonder he could barely hold a conversation. Â Or flirt properly. Â He toyed briefly with the idea of reining it in. Â Heâd keep an eye out for any signs to back off, but when Ed glanced back up, Mustangâs eyes had fixed on the hand. Â As soon as he realized Ed had spotted him, however, he flushed and turned away.
âŠSo maybe not.  Ed smirked slightly.
âWell, youâll get plenty of opportunity to travel in more favorable conditions if you want.â Â Ed snapped the file shut with an air of finality. Â âSo, onto other matters. Â Youâve heard about Lieutenant Rossâs promotion?â
Mustang nodded, turning back to Ed, seeming to relax now that he wasnât the topic of conversation. Â Well, he should enjoy it for the couple seconds it lasted. Â âTo First Lieutenant, yes?â
âYeah, thatâs it.â Â Ed leaned back in his chair, his expression innocent. Â So innocent, in fact, that any of the rest of his team could have spotted trouble a mile away. Â âIâm taking the team out to drinks tonight to celebrate. Â All on me. Â You should join us.â
âJoinâme?â Â Mustang drew back, looking a little alarmed. Â âYou shouldnât go through the troubleââ
Ed waved his hand. Â âNonsense. Â Youâre part of the team, arenât you? Â Everyone else is coming. Â Nice chance to socialize a little more.â
He grinned, and he could see Mustang hesitate. Â âYou mean that?â he asked, and the combination of wariness and hope in his voice startled Ed, prompting a small jumping sensation in his chest that he hadnât expected. Â But then again, he shouldnât be surprised: going from a life of isolation like Mustang had described straight into a team that he had been built on camaraderie had to be a jarring shift.
âOf course,â he said firmly, grinning, and this time he could feel the sincerity shining through instead of the smirk. Â âI know weâd all like to see you here. Â Me especially.â
At that, Mustang went an adorable shade of pink, glancing away and trying to look unaffected.
Edâs smirk returned.
â
Though Ed ended up working late, too late to go back home to change, he always kept a few spare sets of clothes in his office. Â More importantly, he always kept a spare set of absolutely, completely work inappropriate clothes alongside them.
When he stepped into the bar, he knew he turned heads. Â It might be the golden hair, freshly brushed and tied in a high ponytail, bangs framing a dark face with matching golden eyes. Â It might be the hint of eyeliner, smudged underneath those eyes, or the sleeveless red shirt that showed off his arms, one tanned and muscled, the other silver and gleaming in the low light.
Or, it might be the tight black leather pants. Â Who knew?
Ross, Havoc, Breda, and even Fuery had dressed to similar effects, knowing the bar and its unofficial dress code, though Ed probably pushed the boundaries a bit more than them.  Falman had gone for safe.  Mustang had opted for a suit, butâŠ
Well, he certainly didnât wear it the way Ed expected.
Instead of neatly pressed and buttoned, it hung open, the white collared shirt underneath unbuttoned just enough to leave you curious about what would happen if you popped it open one more. Â He had shoved the dark sleeves up to reveal a really, really nice set of forearms, by virtue of belonging to Roy fucking Mustang. Â His hair, messy as ever, fell into eyes that the dim light of the bar seemed to make even darker.
It all culminated in a rumpled effect that, somehow, unbelievably, managed to convey âeffortless sex on legs.â
Formerly smug and confident in his own appearance, the sight quickly sent Ed into a tailspin of no fucking fair!
âColonel!â
Despite the look, Mustang didnât seem to be much different. Â He straightened, eyes wide, and tried to salute. Â Noticing the drink in his hand, Edâs left hand darted out to clasp around his wrist, stopping him from lifting it before he spilled.
âCalm down, soldier,â he teased, offering a careless grin in Royâs direction. Â âNo need for formality here. Â Hell, you can even call me Ed. Â The rest of them do. Â Mostly.â
Roy swallowed, nodding as he lowered his drink, glancing at Edâs hand on his with mild alarm. Â Ed admired the flush that crept up his cheeks for a few moments before releasing it.
âThen I suppose,â he murmured, voice soft, but the glance he shot Ed as he looked up was anything but, âyou should call me Roy? Â While weâre off-duty, of course.â
Ed grinned brightly over at him, and something tiny in Roy seemed to relax at having read the situation correctly. Â He lifted his drink to take another sip, and Ed didnât miss the slight lack of coordination in the movement.
âHow many have you had?â Ed asked, trying to restrain his face back into something that wasnât a smirk. Â Roy glanced up from over the rim of the glass, then lowered it.
âThis is my first one.â
Ed snorted softly, then leaned over to the bar, watching Roy out of the corner of his eye as he ordered a drink for himself. Â Roy didnât miss the opportunity to glance at the assets displayed in the leather pants. Good. Â He needed a confidence booster.
âBetter watch it, then.â He took the drink offered, a real Risembool Moonshineâone of the many reasons he chooses this place to frequentâand turned back to Roy, who looked faintly indignant.
âIâm not drunk!â he protested.
âNo, but you look like you might be soon.â Â Ed took a sip, grinning at the apple pie aftertaste that chased the burning. Â Perfect. Â âYâknow, for someone way bigger than me and all your limbs, I have a feeling Iâm gonna end up outdrinking you.â
Roy scoffed, but of course Edâs words prompted jeering from Breda and Havoc, demanding a drinking contest. Â Ross put a halt to that, insisting that they could get smashed once sheâd had a chance to squeeze several more drinks out of Ed.
âGlad to know you guys keep me around for a reason,â he retorted, swigging the moonshine when she grinned innocently over at him.
In the end, it didnât even take a drinking contest.  Just three drinks with⊠slight strength.
âY-you see, itâs not about the fire!â Roy chattered, hands waving animatedly as Havoc and Ed stared at him intently.  âItâs theâthe damn oxygen!  You just gotta⊠yâknow.â  He waved his hand again, this time dismissively. âYou gotta control that.  And when you⊠uhâŠâ
He frowned in concentration, and Ed lifted two fingers, placing them against his lips with a grin.
âNow, now, donât go around sharinâ your secrets. Â Itâs bad form, and yânever know when someoneâll try to grab âem and usurp you. Â Or use âem for evil. Â Whichever bugs you the most.â
Royâs eyes went wide, and he froze. Â âMy god, youâre right. Â There could be spies anywhere! Â Drachman spies!â
His lips moved against Edâs fingers, and Ed couldnât help but laugh. Â He reached over instead to pat Royâs shoulder. Â âSomethinâ like that, yeah. Â Donât worry, Iâll take care of you.â
Roy nodded solemnly, hilariously so, then lifted his hands to take Edâs, the one on his shoulder, and held it to his chest, staring down at Ed with an intensity that left even his heart almost stuttering.
âThis⊠this is why âm so glad I got you,â he murmured, eyes burning.  ââCause you know this shit.  Youâre⊠youâre damn brilliant, and so good, even when you were youngerâshit, I canât believe I was this lucky.  And my god, youâre gorgeous, too, and I justâŠâ  He shook his head, stepping closer with a wobble.  âCould I kiss you?  God, I wanna kiss you.  ButâŠâ  He let Edâs hand fall, looking suddenly heartbroken.  âBut that would be seducing a superior officer, wouldnâ it?  Shit,â he groaned.
Ed stared at him, jaw dropping, trying to suddenly come to terms with the fact that, yes, he had just heard those words leaving Royâs mouth.
Havoc seemed to have made himself scarce.
âWell, I mean, if youâre concerned about that sort of thing,â Ed said carefully, refraining from mentioning that he had never given a terrible amount of fucks about fraternization. Â Though he would eagerly say yes to this in a heartbeat, he hadnât expected it to come across as a drunk confession, and that made navigating the already tricky waters of consent even harder. Â He hadnât made the first movement for a reason, after all. Â No need to put pressure on Roy. Â He wasnât interested in this unless Roy wanted it, too.
âAnd do you?â
Ed leaned back, tilting his head, and this time, Roy wasnât even subtle with the way his eyes dragged up the dark skin of his neck.
âTell you what, Roy. Â You still feel the same way tomorrow, sober, ask me then.â Â Ed smirked. Â âAlone, preferably.â
Royâs eyes went wide, and Ed didnât know what mental image he had conjured up, but it seemed to be a very nice one indeed. Â He held this expression for a moment, then looked crestfallen again, and Ed winced, feeling as if he had kicked a puppy.
âSo I canât kiss you now?â
Despite the very, very tempting mournful look from those beautiful dark eyes, Ed took a step back, smiling wryly.
âNo, Roy. Â Not yet.â
â
Havoc insisted, nursing a hangover with a book spread open over his eyes, that one day, Ed was going to be too old to drink that much moonshine before coming into work the next morning. Â Ed, bright-eyed and chipper, flipped him off with a loud âFuck you, Lieutenant!â at a pitch and volume that left Havoc wincing.
Ross seemed to be faring a little better, while Breda seemed as untouched as Ed.  Roy⊠well, Ed couldnât exactly tell how Roy was feeling, not with how his face was buried in an atlas.
âTaking me up on that chance to travel, Mustang?â Ed called, shuffling through his paperwork and then organizing it in chronological order (where it had previously been in alphabetical) to make it look like he was doing something.
Mustang only made a quiet noise, not looking up, and Breda snorted.
âTold him he shouldnât bother, but heâs apparently doing that one assignment you got from General Hawkeye. Â You know, mapping out those latest alchemical incidents, which you were supposed to do to see if there was a pattern? Â The one she wanted last week?â
Ed went still. Â Oh, yeah, that had been a thing, but honestly, he had things due that were way later than a week. Â Heâd face her wrath later.
âAny luck?â
âSome, sir,â Mustang murmured, still not looking up, reaching out to take another pin and place it in a spot that seemed to be southwest of Central. Â âNothing concrete yet, though.â
âThatâs not what he said a half hour ago,â Ross murmured, placing the open folder of her weapons certification on his desk. Â âSounded like he was close to cracking it.â
âMmm.â Â Ed signed with a flourish. Â âYâdonât say.â Â He lifted his voice. âHavoc, go get some coffee, and do some actual work for a change. Â And take a babysitter if youâre not sure you wonât get distracted.â
âGuess that means me,â Breda broke in, stepping over and scooping his arm through Havocâs. Â âCâmon.â
âBut boss!â Havoc whined, letting himself be led away. Â âThis is the only place I can sleep without getting yelled at!â
âIâll start yelling if you donât leave me alone.â Â He handed the folder back to Ross. Â âHigh-pitched. Â Singing, even, and youâve heard me sing.â
Havoc made a terrified noise. Â âOh, god. Â Get me outta here, Heymans.â
âGo find a supply closet to sleep in like the rest of us!â Ed called after them.
Ross let out a soft snort, tucking the folder under her arm. Â âIs that what you use supply closets for, sir?â she muttered.
Ed turned, eyebrows raised, expression innocent, and said archly, âNot anymore I donât. Â Not with my office.â
Ross wrinkled her nose. Â âAnd with that, I am leaving. Â Iâll see you later, Colonel. Â And by later I mean, as far away from this moment as I can justify.â
The door clicked behind her, and Ed lifted his head. His team had their flaws, sure, but they at least knew when to exit a room.
It took Roy several minutes to realize that they were alone.
He lifted his head, glancing around, eyes going wide as they took in the empty room. Â Slowly, so very slowly, they slid over to Ed, then quickly looked away.
Ed sighed, standing, then walked over in Royâs direction. Â âI donât bite, you know.â Â He paused, considering, then tilted his head. Â âUnless you want me to.â
Roy let out a panicked choke, shoving suddenly away from the atlas, then turning to cough frantically into his arm. Â When he finished, he turned back to Ed, looking up at him with a mournful, almost panicked expression.
âI⊠last night, I was absolutely⊠I shouldnât have⊠ Iâm so sorryââ
Ed winced. Â He didnât usually feel guilty about this sort of thing, but most parties were usually both on the same page about what they wanted, too. Â He reached out, gently taking Royâs shoulders, trying to smile reassuringly.
âHey, hey. Â Look, itâs okay. Â Iâm not upset. Â How much dâyou remember? Â All of it?â
Looking away again, Roy nodded once.
âThen hey, thatâs somethinâ. Â Iâm not upset. Â Hell, couldnât be further from it. Â You donât gotta be embarrassed. Â I meant what I said, too. Â If you actually still want anything, you just gotta tell me. Â But if not, you say so, right now, and weâll both forget this ever happened.â Â Edâs smile crooked up on one side. Â âDeal?â
At that, Roy seemed to remember how to breathe, and he nodded slowly. Â Ed didnât miss the relief flooding his face, and he dropped his hands from his shoulders, congratulating himself on a crisis averted.
âŠMaybe.  As a blush crept back up Royâs face, Ed wondered what it was this time.
Roy cleared his throat, head turning further away, the same way he did when Ed flirted a little too blatantly.
âWhatâs up?â Ed asked, eyebrow raising.
Roy shifted in his seat for a few more moments, but Ed let him think. Â His patience rewarded him with a shy but hopeful glance upwards.
ââŠSo, when you say you meant what you said, you meanâŠâ
âI mean,â Ed finished for him as it became clear that the trailing off wasnât likely to start back up again, âthat if you wanna kiss, Iâd be happy to, but if you donât, we can forget about it.â
âNo!â  Roy sat bolt upright, dark eyes widening again, and this time they met Edâs.  âNo, thatâs not what IâŠâ  He cleared his throat, then swallowed. Though his blush deepened, he didnât look away this time.  âThatâs not what I want.â
Ed tilted his head, trying not to let the grin inside him split too quickly over his face, scare Roy off. Â âSo whatâs the problem?â
âI⊠well, fraternization, for one.  Well, for all. Thatâs the main problem.  I know weâre not supposed to, and since youâre my commanding officerâŠâ
Ed nodded. Â âYeah, I can get how that might be concerning, and thatâs why Iâm sayinâ you can step away now, if you want. Â Or whenever. Â You couldâwell, you could say yes today and tell me to fuck off tomorrow and Iâd get it. Â No pressure.â
âBut the rules?â
Ed snorted. Â âYeah, there are those. Â And weâd be breakinâ them. Â If thatâs a problem, again, you can tell me to fuck off.â
âN-no!â  Roy sat up at that, eyes gleaming with⊠was that excitement?
Ed finally let himself grin.
âYou like that?â he murmured, leaning in, eyes beginning to gleam as well, he knew. Â âThe idea of it beinâ a secret? Â Never struck me much as a rulebreaker, Major Mustang.â
âIâm not!â Roy gasped, but the expression on his face of suppressed excitement said otherwise.
âCanât fool me,â Ed murmured, leaning in so close that their noses almost touched. Â âNow, I just have one last questionââ
Roy, of course, ruined his smooth delivery of, âCan I kiss you now?â by leaning in with a gasp and pressing his mouth against Edâs.
It wasnât even a particularly skilled kiss, a little harsh, a little clumsy, but something about the eagerness, the earnestness, that sent a thrill deeper into his bones than anything from a more experienced partner could have. Â He lifted his left hand to gently take Royâs jaw, tilting it up and slightly to the side, correcting the angle. Â Once Roy seemed to have the hang of that, he slid the hand around to the back of Royâs neck, sliding his fingers up through that dark hair, softer even than heâd fantasized about.
Royâs lips parted slightly underneath his, and he took the opportunity to flick a tongue out, just a tiny bit, to tease at pressing inside.
With a gasp, Roy jumped back, eyes wider than Ed had ever seen them, blush an attractive crimson color.
âSorry,â Ed murmured, but his smirk dampened the apology. Â âShould I not have done that?â
âNo!â Roy gasped. Â âI mean, yes, that wasâyou should have. Â Should. Â Do. Â Still.â Â He cleared his throat, reaching his hand up to straighten his hair.
âNoted.â Â Ed said the word easily, then turned on his heel, walking briskly towards the door. Â With one quick motion, he locked it.
When he turned back, Roy had stood, watching him, a combination of eagerness and nervousness that forced Ed to bite his lip to keep from fucking losing it.
âS-sirââ
âRoy,â Ed breathed, striding over in a few long steps, reaching up to straighten his hands down his chest. Â âWhen weâre like this, call me Ed.â
Royâs hands lifted to lightly grip Edâs waist, and Ed grinned, sharklike. Â This was going to be fun.
âAll right.â Â Roy swallowed, and Ed admired the bob of his throat as he did. Â âEd.â
âPerfect,â Ed breathed, and with an experienced twist, he pushed Roy back towards his desk. Â Roy followed, a little alarmed and very surprised, until the backs of his thighs hit the wood. Â He paused, clearly thinking Ed would stop there, and then let out an alarmed yelp as an automail hand pressed into his chest, tipping him back onto the desk.
Ed leaned over him, bracing that hand next to his head, grinning as their noses actually touched this time.
âEd, what are youâŠâ
âPlease, Roy,â Ed drawled, pressing his left finger to Royâs lips, then leaning in to kiss him, long and slow. Â âPlease. Â I can tell youâve got a lot to learn, and itâs about time we get started.â

@gettibucket thank you <3 it was only recently that i allowed myself to be unashamedly excited about things so im glad <3 thank you friend <3
Keith vs local wildlife has become something of an in-joke among the paladins by now.
It started on Arus: during the process of exploring, he managed to sniff a flower that was actually a bird-thing, which pecked him on the nose and sent him sprawling on his ass before flying away angrily. Â Other Greatest Hits across the universe include: a very pretty rock he found that turned out to be an egg (with a very angry mother reptile creature); the giant tree he used for a landmark and didnât realize changed color, leaving them wandering in circles for hours; the time he got an entire forest after their lives by stepping on a fern, and the fungus he kicked that released spores that sent him into fits of giggles for days (Shiroâs favorite).
The worst is when the plant life is sentient. Â Pidge is the charmer there, of course, no contest, but it always, always gets along with Shiro, too. Â Keith grumbles that Shiro is so fucking charming that even the plants like him, and their level of goodwill towards him seems to be matched only by their animosity towards Keith. Â Heâs gotten more ass slaps from vines than he ever needed in ten lifetimes. Â Shiro, of course, is over there getting gently showered with pink flower petals.
Reluctantly, he does have to admit one perk: the time they took a walk in that forest that turned out to be telepathic, he thought at first that it was trying to kill him, with all the roots he kept tripping over. Â Still, Shiro was at least there to keep catching him, and that was pretty niceâand thatâs about when it clicked.
It took a little longer for Shiro to pick up on it, but after a particularly forceful shove that sent them both sprawling into each otherâs arms, noses nearly touching, he took the hint: Keith was close enough to physically see the realization as it hit his eyes.
The trees they finally kissed under werenât exactly the purple of wisteria, but Shiro murmured later that they were pretty darn close.
