Poor, poor Lucien. Do not cry for him.
Just a silly edit of Lucien in 'The Scream'. This might also be my reaction to the end of my Cramp Twins AMVs becoming nigh. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cramp Twins belongs to its respected owners and creators.
“View of Basel and the Rhine” (ca. 1927), Ernst Ludwig Kirchner
German art changed spectacularly after 1920. No longer did artists paint the classical Greek model. The horrors of World War I, the terrible economic depression, prostitution, the chasm between the rich and the poor…all were bitterly protested in art.

The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1920)
I’m out of town this week and forgot to plan ahead, so enjoy a pair of Gothic horror flicks I prepped and then forgot about!
Obviously, The Cabinet of Dr Caligari was a heavy point of inspiration for the likes of Tim Burton. Visuals are some of the more striking aspects of the story, which feeds into the narrative twist. The town, with its angular lines, off-kilter structures, and unusual ‘natural’ elements like trees, is the product of a madman’s fantasy. Of course it doesn’t sync up with naturalistic set design or conventional performance. We are operating in a sort of nightmare logic.
Conditioning and tyranny are strong through-lines here, even taking into account the framing device. Dr Caligari uses Cesare to enact brutal murders, using the somnambulist as his drone. The asylum director also has an air of control and authority, but this time he is backed up by the power of the establishment. An interesting reflection from a post-Great War film from Weimar Germany. Rumblings of fascism already in the periphery, and perhaps not even in the ‘periphery’.
