Citrinitas â Telestic Ekstasis (Caligari)
Telestic Ekstasis is the second EP that weirdo Finnish metal outfit Citrinitas have shared with us over the past five months. Combined thatâs just under 30 minutes of music, but the relatively bare amount includes more interesting and freaky experiences than a lot of bands could muster in three or four times as much. This new EP isnât quite as infernally inbent as Unending Descent, the remarkable demo of blackened doom Citrinitas sicced on our heads back in January. But Telestic Ekstasis is another mournful missive from damaged consciousnesses, an agonized march through the alienated hinterlands of the Scandi underground. Itâs also very, very good.

Ignobleth â Manor of Primitive Anticreation (Caligari)
The title of Ignoblethâs new LP, Manor of Primitive Anticreation, suggests a literate death metal outfit nodding toward weird fictionsâ Ur sources: the âmanorâ for Edgar Allan Poeâs near-obsessive attentions to built space and enclosure (that old House of Usher; the tight, gruesome crypts in âThe Black Catâ and âCast of Amontilladoâ and âThe Premature Burialâ; the long succession of elaborate rooms in âMasque of the Red Deathâ; and so on), and the âprimitive anticreationâ for H P Lovecraftâs ancient, impossible lifeforms. The music isnât as manneredâforgive the punâas Poeâs prose or quite as fantastical as Lovecraftâs interdimensional grotesques, but as death metal goes, Ignobleth makes some loathsome, writhing, richly pustulant noise, reaching toward musical complexity.

Barbaric Oath â Sword, Sorcery, Vengeance (Caligari)
Itâs not often this reviewer is so grateful for the distorting effects of the death metal growl, that variety of abdominally focused howling that reduces lyrics to a burbling gastric soup. But given the goofily moronic clips of film dialogue Barbaric Oath slips in between songs on Sword, Sorcery, Vengeance, the bandâs first EP, one might give tentative thanks. Likely thereâs a plentiful description of lumbering saurian forms, rippling pectorals and heaving boobs. Song titles just about get us there: âDragon Lordâ and âBestial Witcheryâ are about as subtle as Barbaric Oath can seem to skew its utterances. At least the guttural groans spare us the details.
Many questions about the watchers and Caligari. (wall of text below)
Why Earth? Why a tophat and suit with a bunch of arms? Why cryptids? Who gets chosen to become a watcher? Does a new watcher get chosen when another gets too rotten to keep going? (the watchers seem to be in worse condition than the last one as they speak to Cesare) If Cesare is the newest watcher and he's from 1025, when and where did the others come from, year one? Did LDG get her position the same way as the watchers? Why are all of the other watchers presumably men? Why does Caligari need an assistant? Where is the rest of LDGS body? Why did LDG and the other watchers perish when Caligari was defeated? (because Ces defeated him and they didn't?) Do the watchers and potentially LDG get to move onto their respective afterlives, if any? Why was Cesare's cabinet secluded? Why does Caligari collect cryptids and then just let them collect dust? How long did it take Ces to collect the others? Are the cryptids grouped together in accordance to who collected them Is Cesare the only one who captures cryptids and the other watchers do other things for Caligari? If Caligari is a fungus (from space), is there a chance that others like him sprouted from his fungus...thread vein root thingies? Did Cesare cough up blood and get a bloody nose because he became old? Did he cough up blood and get a bloody nose because of how rapidly he became mortal and old? Did he cough up blood and get a bloody nose because of his cause of death in his last moments of mortality? If Cesare is 'put away' between assignments, does he like..go to sleep in 1408 and wake up in 1992? When did Cesare first come to America? Before the US was established?
