How deep is that icy blue water on Greenland's ice sheet? Dr. Allen Pope, of the National Snow and Ice Data Center, is using data from the NASA/USGS Landsat 8 satellite to find out. In this video, Dr. Pope shares what he sees when he looks at a Landsat image of the Greenland ice sheet just south of the Jakobshavn Glacier. Because the lakes are darker than the ice around them, they absorb more energy from the sun. A little bit of melt concentrates in one place, and then melts more, establishing a feedback mechanism accelerating the growth of the lake. When the lakes get big enough they can force open fractures that then drill all the way down to the bed of the glacier, transporting this water to the base where it can temporarily speed up the flow of the ice.
Senior year, geography majors often start wondering what they are going to do with their degree after they graduate. For some, the answer is obvious: go on to grad school and become a professor. For others, however, the answer isn't quite so clear. Geography majors from the Class of 2009 started this group because they wanted to know how other geography majors went about parlaying their geography major into a job. In essence, they wanted others to share the story of their job search so they could get ideas. Although they have now graduated, their queries remain: What kind of work are you doing? How did you find it? How is your geography education figuring into this work? Do you have suggestions as to specific companies/agencies that employ people with geographic skills, including cartography, GIS, remote sensing, and the ability to solve problems from a spatial perspective? C'mon!! Share your story. Give some advice. Students: ask questions!!!! Geography grads will be happy to answer. This group is intended especially for geographers who received their B.A/B.S. degrees from North American universities, although ANYONE with a degree in geography can join. It is also intended for geography majors, minors, and undergraduate students who are simply thinking about majoring. There ARE jobs out there that employ geographers and employers out there who value geography degrees. Let's hear about them and see if we can make some connections!
Real time topo map generation! So cool!
