General Banking and Investment Banking
Recently, the government forcibly merged five Bangladeshi banks that were on the brink of collapse and renamed them "Sammilito Islami Bank". The government then decided that depositors would get their principal amounts back, but not the profits from the last two years. However, facing customer disappointment and anger, the government decided to pay the profits for the last two years.
My question is: Islamic banking operates on a profit-and-loss sharing basis. If the bank makes a profit, depositors get profit; if the bank incurs a loss, depositors face the loss. Since these five banks made no profit and were on the path to bankruptcy, on what basis will depositors get profit? Or is the mentality of these customers that it's Islamic Shariah rules when there's profit, but Interest-system rules when there's loss? In case of loss, they shouldn't even get the principal back, since it's an investment.
The so-called depositors of Sammilito Islami Bank are essentially being bailed out, and that's with my tax money.
There are basically two types of banking systems in the world: General Banking and Investment Banking. General Banking collects deposits on an interest basis and lends on an interest basis. In Investment Banking, the bank invests depositors' money in the stock market, bonds, and various potentially profitable projects in expectation of profit. If the bank profits, it gives half of it to the depositors.
It's impossible to completely eliminate interest from the world. Suppose someone wants to get married, or needs medical treatment, or wants to buy an apartment or car for personal use - the borrower's money isn't being invested in a profitable business in these cases. So, interest-based lending is inevitable here. Interest has existed, exists, and will continue to exist.
Both General Banking and Investment Banking systems should prevail. However, a specific bank should follow only one method - this should be the rule.
