a subtle reminder from yours truly.
never cease to create. to produce, to express. regardless of its execution—even if it be amateur at best—so be it! there's no obligation to share it beyond yourself. challenge yourself to make this a daily habit. a small doodle; a single paragraph; whatever you feel inclined toward during that moment. maintain this exercise in creative expression, and, before you begin to realize it: momentum and technique organically stabilize a structural foundation tailored to your preferences.
there's just that singular rule to remember: do not obstruct your own path. do not discredit yourself. having produced anything is better than nothing at all. [i've also noticed this pattern stabilize my daily mood, which naturally swats depression away.]
initialize the behavior by taking that first step. you owe it to yourself.
the previous track representing the first i'd crafted; this'n would embody my personal favorite.
using the phenomenal Dialekt by my dearly beloved Sugar Bytes, i tweaked and conjured up the samples lacking any particular direction of unity between them... and, evidently, it's fair to conclude the viral influence that be Boards of Canada had infected me upon first hearing them in my teenage years. it nearly brought me to tears hearing all 8 individual sounds play together so unexpectedly.
after many months of exercising my creativity while remaining elusive about it, in which i challenged myself to create one song per day, i've finally decided to share a select few with you all. 🌹
i'm still learning the tricks of the trade... but, this one, originally titled 'Gluten Rich Delicatessen', marked my first i'd fully crafted without any groovebox training wheels. i wouldn't say it's my best, but a humble sentiment to say the least.
furthermore, as a bedroom producer, i'm hoping to someday dismantle the negative connotation behind that term. Damon Albarn (Gorillaz; Blur) proved the iPad to be a reputable device in terms of music production back in 2010/11 upon the release [and success] of The Fall—which was notably composed during his downtime while touring, entirely on his iPad and just a few other instruments otherwise. with Apple's efficiency in releasing their next product line per year, it's safe to declare that over a decade later has vastly improved the device's capabilities (which is speculated in merely a few years time may very well implement the same hardware capabilities as Apple's very on MacBook).
anywho. i'm open to any criticism and/or questions—regarding workflow, specific apps, etc. i maybe kinda sorta spent several thousands in credit on audio unit apps... safe to say i've played with most.

"OVER THE LINE" GBRRRL JOHNSEN // 2024 [digital collage | 2:3 aspect ratio]
my first [digital] collage! physical ones here.
after years of chronic procrastination… here it is: my first official audio track. 🎧🔊🤖⁉️
“BREATHLESS WOMAN” was inspired by my infatuation for mid– 20th century US propaganda films; notably their sensationalist portrayal of mental illnesses shown in hospital patients, along with the archaic methods of effectively catering to their individual needs.
the vocals were sourced from a segment of an interview involving a woman diagnosed with a depressive disorder, wherein she discusses her traumas in relation to the predatory sexual abuse administered by a paternal figure during her youth. what captivated me was the woman’s emotional demeanor—depicting a confidence seemingly rooted by Apathy, almost as if she possessed a forbiddance in allowing these abhorrent events to tarnish her definitive Self. an absolute refusal of retroactive frailty. perhaps the significance in acknowledging our own Self-Worth.
BREATHLESS WOMAN // 2024
naturally, to go along with my latest track, i had to juxtapose it alongside some disturbing psych hospital footage…
