Mahindraâs David has vintage performance in loss to Rain or Shine
Gary David of Mahindra shoots over James Yap of Rain or Shine during their game in the 2017 PBA Commissionerâs Cup. Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.net After getting his groove in the fourth quarter, Gary David hoped that he was on the floor late in regulation of Mahindraâs game against Rain or Shine. âIf I was there on the floor, I will get the ball and Iâll take the shot,â David said. David was on the bench when the Floodbuster turned to import James White, who heaved the potential game-winning three and backironed the shot, in the waning seconds of regulation as the game went into overtime. David had every reason to feel frustrated after he had just channeled his old self and delivered a vintage performance in the fourth quarter, unleashing all of his 13 points in the payoff period to help the Floodbuster comeback from an 80-73 deficit in the final eight minutes and even grabbed an 86-80 lead with 2:13 to play. Though he and the rest of Mahindra muffed their chances in the clutch and fell to the Elasto Painters, 99-95, in overtime, David believes his team was able to show glimpses of what itâs capable of. âWe still lack the experience and James is still young. But weâre staying positive and weâre happy with the way the team is playing. We fought until the end against a strong team like Rain or Shine, but again, we still lack the experience and the poise closing in end game situations,â he said. Despite the Floodbusterâs 0-2 record, David is keeping the faith, noting that with the way the team is performing, the squad is bound for a win anytime soon. âItâs still early in the conference. I just told the guys, every game, we need to learn and in these first two games, we learned a lot. Weâre looking forward in getting our first win soon,â he said. The 35-year-old David also thinks this game shows that he still has a lot left in his tank, with him making the most of the chances coach Chris Gavina is giving him. âIâm just ready. Iâm prepared whenever coach Chris puts me in,â he said. âHe knows that I just came back from a knee injury, but he gives us confidence,â he said. âI just tell him Iâm ready when he needs me. Iâm ready since birth.â Written by: Randolph B. DĂ©jĂ vu for James Yap as âEl Granadaâ explodes against him again: âDapat hindi ko na lang i-challenge ehâ
PBA Media Bureau During one stretch during Rain or Shineâs game against Mahindra on Sunday, âEl Granadaâ Gary David treated fans to a vintage performance as he exploded for 13 points in the fourth quarter, many of them coming against two-time PBA MVP James Yap. Even against Yapâs defensive efforts, Davidâs shots just went in, including one three-pointer late in the fourth where he tried to fish a foul as he took a shot while Yap was swiping at the ball. âDapat hindi ko na lang i-challenge eh. Parang kapag nakita niya ako parang nanlalaki yung mata niya eh,â Yap told InterAksyon.com. Shoo-shoot talaga kahit may challenge.â Memories of the classic game between Davidâs underdog Powerade Tigers squad and Yapâs No. 1-seeded B-MEG team must have flooded back for âBig Gameâ James, a contest where David scored 37 points and his eight three-pointers in a knockout game upset of the Llamados. Unlike in that game, though, Yapâs team was able to weather the storm this time and pulled off a 99-95 win in overtime. Yap believes that a player of the calibre of David, his former teammate on an all-amateur national team in 2003, deserves a chance to prove he still belongs among the top players in the league. âMayroon pa yang ilalabas. Tsaka si Gary, nagpapakundisyon naman. Nakikita ko sa Instagram niya. Work hard talaga,â Yap added. âGanyan naman ang mga players eh. Kahit na anong pagpapakundisyon mo kung wala kang oras, paano mo maipapakita yung kundisyon mo?â He also believes that David should be in better form after undergoing the same knee procedure that Yap had prior to the start of the conference. The two actually spoke about the procedure, with David asking questions from Yap as the Rain or Shine star had it first.
Gary David signs with Mahindra Floodbuster
PBA Media Bureau âEl Granadaâ is back. Veteran gunner Gary David will be returning to the PBA hardcourt soon after he agreed to a deal with the Mahindra Floodbuster on Tuesday. Davidâs signing came nine days after the start of the Oppo Philippine Cup. The 38-year-old former Gilas Pilipinas guard last suited up for the San Miguel Beermen where he saw limited action. He spent three years with the Meralco Bolts whom he had a bitter split with. The four-time scoring champion is a welcome addition to the roster of Mahindra which made head-scratching moves prior to the season. The team gave away top guns Aldrech Ramos, KG Canaleta and Paolo Taha in separate trades. David isnât expected to suit up in Mahindraâs game versus the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters on Wednesday. Apart from David, Mahindra also picked up rarely used forward Rey Guevarra from the free agent pool. http://j.mp/2gBVGYk

LOOK | Gary David all smiles in San Miguel debut
âEl Granadaâ Gary David didnât hide his joyfulness when he made his debut for the powerhouse San Miguel Beermen in the Oppo PBA Commissionerâs Cup on Sunday. David, who had been idle for almost a month after being released by the Meralco Bolts, didnât play heavy minutes. He entered the game at the 1:45 mark of the final quarter when all but the the final score was already settled. The former three-time scoring champion quickly displayed his wares, sinking a layup off a baseline drive for his first two points as a member of the Beermen. As if needing more firepower, the Beermen only boosted their title aspirations with the acquisition of David, who, now in his 12th year in the league, is still seeking his first PBA title. David makes unplanned debut for SMB, eyes 1st PBA title
Gary David made his debut for San Miguel Beer on Sunday, April 10, 2016, against Phoenix. PBA IMAGES Gary David feared his career could be over after Meralco relegated him to the teamâs unrestricted free agent slot. Thinking that at 37, it would be hard for him to crack any roster spot in the PBA. Fortunately for him, he got more than what he asked for as he landed with a powerhouse team in San Miguel. âNung tumawag ang SMB, talagang ginanahan ako dahil San Miguel yan eh. Every player pinapangarap makalaro sa San Miguel group, lalo na sa San Miguel, kaya talagang napakasaya ko,â he said. The 6-foot-2 guard understands he may not get much playing time given that the Beermen are loaded with players holding the same position as him. But being a veteran and knowing the situation that heâs in, David is more than willing to adjust. David wasnât supposed to make his debut on Sunday against Phoenix. It wasnât part of head coach Leo Austriaâs plans, but that was before the fans started chanting Davidâs name similar to that Gilas Pilipinas game in the 2013 Fiba Asia Championship. And to the cheering fansâ delight, Austria inserted David in the final 1:45 with the Beermen comfortably ahead, 115-102. David wasted little time as he immediately scored his first points wearing the traditional red and black colors of the Beermen on a baseline reverse. âHindi pa nya alam yung sistema namin and he has to learn a lot of things,â he said. âWeâre winning because of our system and the players know what to do. Itâs obvious na nangangapa pa si Gary. It was a very emotional experience for him but the good thing with Gary is pwede namin siya i-replace for Marcio on off-nights, and at the same time, pwede silang magsabay.â David just wants to make the most out of the opportunity heâs given. At least, pagpasok ko, naka-contribute ako kaagad,â he said. David has yet to win a title in 12 seasons in the league and being part of San Miguel, which has won three championships in the previous four conferences, puts him closer to reach his ultimate goal. The post David makes unplanned debut for SMB, eyes 1st PBA title appeared first on Philippine Basketball Association. http://j.mp/23udS5h
Beermen enhance top two bid, pound Fuel Masters
PBA IMAGES San Miguel Beer clung onto second spot and enhanced its bid for a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals as it fought back from an early 19-point deficit and repulsed Phoenix, 121-109, in the Oppo PBA Commissionerâs Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Sunday night. The Beermen waged a chase in the second quarter, seized control in the third and sustained the momentum in the final canto en route to the crucial victory that boosted their drive for a Top Two finish in the elimination round of the mid-season tourney. At 7-3, the Beermen automatically claim a Top Two windup and the coveted incentive in the quarters if they beat the Tropang TNT Texters (6-4) in the final game of the elims on Friday also at the Big Dome. Alex Cabagnot, Chris Ross and Marcio Lassiter all found their range in the third quarter, firing away huge treys to fuel a decisive surge that shifted the momentum in SMBâs favor. The Fuel Masters failed to recover from their third-quarter slide and went down with a closing 3-8 win-loss record in their maiden conference in the pros. Tyler Wilkerson spearheaded their chase from 6-25 down and went firing all the way to the very end to finish with 40 points that went with 19 rebounds, four assists and three steals. Kevinn Pinkney kept in step with Wilkerson stride for stride in the first half but slowed down in the final half. The Fuel Masters got off to a jackrabbit start but tapered off in the second period, and settled for a 55-54 edge at halftime of the match featuring the debut of Gary David as a Beerman. At 115-102 with less than two minutes left to play, David entered the floor. In his very first touch of the ball, David connected with a short jumper for his first basket in his new team. The Beermen slowly chipped away at their early 19-point deficit and grabbed the lead at 50-49. Pinkney scored on a pair of free throws and two short jumpers as against Gabby Espinasâ two charities and a twinner by Cabagnot as Phoenix regained the upper hand going into the final half. The two imports both had had 19 points each by the half. Espinas backed Wilkerson with 10 while JC Intal was the next best scorer for Phoenix with eight.  The post Beermen enhance top two bid, pound Fuel Masters appeared first on Philippine Basketball Association. http://j.mp/1VfiF9N
