Through shared danger, playful rivalry, and moments of vulnerability, Gareki and Readerâs mutual admiration blossoms into a tender and passionate romance.
genre: I would say its somewhere between Adventure-Romance and located in action oder fantasy.
The sun was high over the bustling market square, golden light bouncing off the colorful stalls, the scent of spices and baked bread filling the air. You adjusted your sunhat and tightened the strap of your designer bag, moving carefully between merchants. Despite your wealthy upbringing, the crowd excited youâyou were determined to explore the world on your own terms, to find your own purpose rather than follow the path your family had laid out for you.
Thatâs when you noticed a subtle movement in the corner of your vision. A shadow darted, agile and deliberate, approaching from behind.
Before you could react, a hand shot out, aiming for the strap of your bag. Instinct took over. You spun, grabbed the wrist, and pulled sharply.
The would-be thiefâa boy with dark hair and a cocky grinâlost his balance. You both tumbled to the cobblestones with a thud, sending a few startled merchants glancing your way.
âOi! Let go!â he grunted, struggling against your surprisingly strong grip.
âYou were going to steal from me,â you said, standing, glaring down at him. âNot today.â
The boy froze, mid-struggle, then blinked. âYou⊠youâre strong,â he said, a mix of awe and embarrassment in his voice. âMost people just scream orââ
Before he could finish, a small commotion near the fountain drew your attention. Two figures were approaching, one with striking blue hair and another with a serene, confident expression.
âGareki!â the blue-haired boy called. âAre you causing trouble again?â
The thiefâyou realized with a flashâwas indeed Gareki. He groaned, rubbing his wrist where youâd held him. âItâs not what it looks likeâŠâ
You crossed your arms. âReally? Because it looked like attempted theft to me.â
The blue-haired boyâNai, you later learnedâsmiled warmly at you. âIâm sorry about him. Gareki can be⊠impulsive.â
You hesitated, then smiled back. âIâve met worse. And I can take care of myself.â
Nai tilted his head, âYou seem⊠capable. Would you like to join us? Weâre heading out soon, and you could travel with us. Thereâs more to see than this market.â
Something in his toneâgentle, invitingâmade you pause. Your life had always been filled with luxury, but never with adventure. Never with a sense of purpose beyond wealth and status.
âI⊠I think Iâd like that,â you said after a moment, glancing at Gareki. He was staring at you now, expression unreadable but clearly intrigued.
And so began your journey with the Circus Ship Crew.
Gareki trailed behind you with a smirk, muttering under his breath, âNever thought someone like you could pin me down⊠maybe youâre trouble after all.â
You laughed, brushing the dust from your clothes. âI prefer the term⊠competent.â
As the group moved through the square, you got to know everyone: Nai, whose calm demeanor was both reassuring and mysterious; the lively and protective Tsukumo; and Yogi, whose infectious energy made the crew feel like family. Despite your refined upbringing, you felt⊠at home here.
Gareki glanced back at you once more, dark eyes flickering with something unspoken. Adventure, danger, and curiosity had a new companion nowâand perhaps, he realized, someone worth taking seriously.
___ _ _ _
The ship rocked gently as it sailed away from the bustling airport, the sky a canvas of gold and crimson as evening settled. You leaned against the railing, watching the waves glitter like molten silver, trying to process everything that had happened in the market square. Just hours ago, you had been standing in the crowded streets, defending your bag from a streetwise thief, and now you were aboard a ship full of strangersâyet not strangers at all.
Gareki was there too, sitting cross-legged on the deck, idly tossing a coin in his hand, eyes sharp and calculating. The boy you had nearly toppled in the market now moved with a confidence that was unsettling and magnetic.
âYouâre quiet,â he said suddenly, voice low, almost teasing. âI like it. Makes me wonder whatâs going on in that head of yours.â
You raised an eyebrow,âAnd you think Iâd tell you?â
âMaybe,â he said with a smirk. âOr maybe Iâll figure it out anyway.â
There was a pause. You studied him carefully. This boyâthis clever, sneaky, unpredictable boyâwas unlike anyone you had met. He carried an edge, a history that whispered from his movements, his watchful gaze. And it wasnât just arrogance; there was a method to his chaos.
âYou donât trust anyone, do you?â you asked cautiously, surprising yourself with the question.
Gareki froze, the coin falling from his hand. For a moment, he said nothing. Then he shrugged, a small, almost deflective gesture. âTrust gets you hurt. People⊠take what they want. Iâve seen it. Done it myself, enough times. Better to rely on me. Always.â
Something in his tone struck you. There was pain there, carefully hidden beneath his smirk, beneath the rogue confidence he wielded like a weapon.
âSo⊠you grew up like this?â you asked softly.
He laughed, but it was hollow at first. âHad to. Alone. Always alone. Had to find my own way. Didnât ask for help. Didnât want it. I⊠do what I need to survive. What I want. Doesnât mean Iâm heartlessâjust⊠careful.â
You studied him for a long moment. And yet, even with all the barriers, he had a softness in his eyes that he didnât hide. It was subtle, but it was thereâfor Nai, for women, for children. He hated hurting them. He hated killing. And you realized, for someone who had spent his life taking what he needed, he had a moral line he would not cross.
âI can respect that,â you said finally. âYou do what you must, but you have rules. That takes courage.â
A flicker of surprise crossed his face, quickly masked with a smirk. âRules, huh? Iâll take that as a compliment coming from someone like you.â
You smiled faintly, leaning against the railing again,âIâm not as capable as you think, Gareki. But⊠I can hold my own. Maybe weâre not so different.â
He tilted his head, eyes dark and assessing. âMaybe⊠maybe. But youâre different. Youâre used to⊠luxury. People looking out for you. Not scraps and shadows. That makes you⊠dangerous in a way I donât see often.â
His words made your chest tightenânot with fear, but something else. Admiration? Respect? Something that fluttered nervously in your stomach. As the evening wore on, Nai joined you, his serene smile warming the air. âItâs good you came,â he said gently. âI think youâll find the crew⊠is more like family than anything else.â
Gareki watched quietly, leaning back slightly, arms crossed. You noticed the way he studied Nai, protective and almost possessive, a soft spot for someone so innocent and pure. It reminded you of his characterâclever, sneaky, and self-serving on the surface, but with a heart he carefully hid.
âYouâll see,â Nai continued, looking at both of you, âadventure isnât just about danger or excitement. Itâs about learningâabout yourself, and about the people who choose to be with you.â
And in that moment, you realized why you had been drawn here, why you had let yourself be caught by a pickpocket in a crowded square. This crewâtheir chaos, their honesty, their dangerâcalled to something inside you. Garekiâs smirk returned, and this time it had warmth. âGuess weâll see how you handle it, huh?â
You laughed softly. âI think Iâll manage. Especially with a partner like you.â
He froze slightly at the words, eyes darkening with something unspokenâinterest, curiosity, maybe even the first flickers of affection. Then he leaned slightly closer, lowering his voice. âJust⊠donât get in over your head. I donât protect everyone.â
âI can take care of myself,â you said with a sly smile, matching his intensity.
But as you both looked out at the endless ocean, a quiet understanding passed between youâa shared respect, the promise of playful rivalry, and the faint spark of something more. Garekiâs world, dangerous and shadowed though it was, suddenly didnât seem so impossible to step into.

The streets of the port town were quiet at night, the usual bustle replaced by an eerie stillness. You tugged your coat tighter around yourself, feeling the chill of the evening air. Nai had entrusted you with something importantâa message that had to be delivered to a contact outside the city. But it wasnât just a simple delivery. He had insisted that Gareki accompany you.
âAlone, huh?â he asked, arms crossed as he leaned against a wall. The smirk on his face carried amusement, but his sharp eyes missed nothing.
âAlone with you,â you corrected, raising an eyebrow. âNot that Iâm afraid, but it does feel⊠dangerous.â
âGood,â he muttered, spinning a coin in one hand. âDanger keeps you sharp. And youâve got to keep up if youâre tagging along with me.â
You followed him down narrow alleyways, shadows stretching long across the cobblestones. The thrill of being in his worldâof moving in stealth, of having to anticipate every sound and movementâmade your pulse race. You could feel him watching you, assessing, testing.
âYouâve got quick reflexes,â he said quietly, just loud enough for you to hear. âI can tell youâve had some⊠training.â
You smirked. âAnd youâre not the only clever one, Gareki. Donât underestimate me.â
He chuckled, a low, rough sound that sent a shiver down your spine. âNot a chance.â
As you turned a corner near the docks, a figure emerged from the shadowsâclearly intending to ambush you. Before you could react fully, Gareki moved, stepping in front of you, one hand reaching for a hidden dagger.
But you didnât hesitate. With a precision that surprised even you, you intercepted the attacker, twisting his arm, flipping him over your shoulder, and sending him sprawling to the ground.
Garekiâs eyes widened, admiration shining through the usual cocky expression. âHoly⊠I didnât think youâd actually handle that,â he muttered, his voice rough but impressed.
You dusted off your hands, smirking. âI told youâI can handle myself.â
He stepped closer, brushing a stray strand of hair from your face, his hand lingering. âIâm starting to think youâre⊠dangerous in more ways than one.â
Your pulse jumped, but you kept your expression neutral. âCareful, Gareki. Flattery can be dangerous.â
He leaned in slightly, lowering his voice to a playful growl. âMaybe I like dangerous.â
The mission continued, the two of you moving like shadows through the city. With every narrow alley, every whispered instruction, the tension between you grewânot just the thrill of danger, but something deeper. Every brush of his hand, every teasing glance sent sparks through your chest.
At one point, he caught your wrist to steady you while you balanced on a narrow ledge. Your hands pressed together, eyes locking, and for a heartbeat, the world seemed to stop. His smirk softened into something almost vulnerable.
âYouâre⊠amazing,â he admitted quietly. âNot like anyone Iâve ever met.â
You blinked, heart fluttering. âYouâre not so bad yourself.â
A laugh escaped him, warm and rough. âNot bad⊠huh? Iâll take it. But donât get used to compliments. Iâm full of surprises.â
The rest of the night passed in a blend of adrenaline and unspoken connection. By the time you returned to the Circus Ship, the mission complete, the bond between you was undeniable. Gareki had seen your strength, your courage, and your sharp mindâand you had glimpsed the depth behind his rogue exterior, the part of him that hated hurting others and only acted with stealth and intelligence to protect the ones he cared about.
As you stepped onto the deck, he caught your hand briefly, a fleeting but deliberate touch. âNext time,â he murmured, voice low and intimate, âdonât be so reckless. Or maybe⊠be reckless with me.â
You smiled, chest warm. âIâll consider it, thief.â
He grinned, dark eyes glinting. âGood. I like it when you challenge me.â
And in that quiet, fleeting moment, both of you realized something had shiftedâthe solo mission had not just tested your skills, but ignited a fire between you. A fire that neither danger nor distance could easily extinguish.

The Circus Ship rocked gently under the twilight sky, the ocean stretching endlessly around you. The dayâs adventure had ended, and yet neither of you had spoken much. Gareki leaned casually against the railing, tossing a coin in his hand, eyes sharp but unfocused, as if he were waiting for the right momentâwaiting for something he wasnât sure he could say.
You approached quietly, letting the soft glow of the setting sun illuminate the contours of his face. âGareki?â you asked softly.
He glanced up, a small, almost nervous smile tugging at his lips. âYeah?â
You stepped closer, heart fluttering despite the calm sea around you. âI⊠I had a good time tonight. Iâve never felt⊠like this before, with anyone.â
Garekiâs smirk faltered slightly, replaced by something raw and unguarded. âNeither have I,â he admitted. His dark eyes met yours, intense and vulnerable. âYouâre⊠different. I donât usually⊠care about anyone. But you⊠I canât stop thinking about you.â
Your chest tightened, warmth spreading through you. âI feel the same. Youâre clever, sneaky, dangerous⊠but kind. And you protect the people you care about. Even me.â
He swallowed hard, stepping closer until the space between you was charged with electricity. âIâve been trying to tell you⊠in my own way,â he murmured, voice rough and low, âthat I want you. Not just here on this ship, or tonight⊠but⊠with me. Be my girl, Y/N. Be part of my world.â
Your breath caught. âGareki⊠Iââ
He didnât wait for you to finish. He leaned in, gently at first, letting your eyes meet his, searching, asking, before his lips pressed against yours. The kiss was soft, tender, yet filled with a desperate, pent-up longing. You melted into it, hands reaching for him, feeling the warmth and intensity that had been simmering between you for so long. When he pulled back slightly, just enough to rest his forehead against yours, his voice was almost a whisper. âYouâre mine, Y/N. And Iâll do whatever it takes to keep you safe⊠to keep you with me.â
You smiled, chest swelling with happiness. âAnd Iâm yours, Gareki. Always.â
The ship sailed on under the twilight sky, waves lapping gently against the hull, as the two of you stood togetherâhands entwined, hearts beating fast, the promise of countless adventures and shared moments stretching out before you. For the first time, you werenât just a wealthy girl seeking purpose, and he wasnât just a clever thief navigating the shadows. Together, you had found something rare, dangerous, and beautiful: love.
Gareki smirked, brushing a stray lock of hair from your face,âGuess this means youâre officially part of my world now.â
You laughed softly, leaning into him. âAnd I wouldnât have it any other way.â
The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant streaks of gold and crimson, as Gareki and you shared another lingering kiss, sealing the start of a story that belonged to only the two of you.

A fairly quick illustration of Gareki from Karneval. Suggested over on Threads.
I hadn't heard of the series before, but it has a cool aesthetic so I'll be checking it out.
