In formal English, we use the terms “the former” and “the latter” to refer back to the first and last item of a set respectively.
Have a look at the grammar sheet below to learn when and how to use them.
Note: The former and the latter may come up in the gapped text exercise (C1 reading part 7 / C2 reading part 6) at the beginning of the paragraph after the gap to refer back to the previous one. They are connecting words that will help you link two paragraphs.

C2 PROFICIENCY - GAPPED TEXT (reading and use of English part 6)
TIP #4: Spotting "SUCH" at the beginning of the paragraphs after the gaps or at the beginning of the removed paragraphs.
We use such to refer back to the thing or person that has just been mentioned, with the meaning “of this/that kind”
Examples :
There have been previous attempts at coups.
We regard such methods as entirely unacceptable.
(Such methods = methods like coups)
They needed someone who was both an excellent administrator and a manager.
Such a person was not easy to find. (Such a person =a person like this...)

GAPPED TEXT (reading and use of English part 6)
TIP #3: Always highlight comparative and superlative adjectives before and after the gaps. We may come across words or phrases that introduce a comparison (with something mentioned in the previous paragraph) or to introduce a subject that will be developed in the following paragraph.
Example : “He knew this time it would be more difficult.”
