YOOOOO did anyone ever get this tape back in the late 90s?
In the late 90s the only place you could see game footage that wasn't a commercial or game kiosk was demo disks
In the early 2000s there would be websites that could host the trailers for games, but they would take like 20 minutes to load and be low res as hell
You wanted the humble demo disk:
pop that shit into your ps1 and enjoy game trailers and playable demos!
almost every month you could probably get up to 3 or four of these just by buying gaming mags
And obvioulsy if you needed info on how to play a game, you could get it from those magazines or by buying a big fat strategy guide
But this fucking tape? This had full-ish playthroughs of games, it was a strategy guide you could fucking watch. This a HUGE deal back then
so it doesn't seem to say it anywhere on the box, but I clearly remember it saying somewhere that this was meant to the first of a series of these video guides, and I remember seeing them for sale in just about every video game store I walked into
obviously that didn't happen, sales were probably low af
BUT GUESS WHAT:
heres that whole fucking video for you to enjoy, in all its edgy cynical late 90s goodness!
Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (the game)
I spend like 13+ hours a day working on games which leads to some stupid thinking patterns. Just now I was thinking of the inspiration for classic art house feminist film Jeanne Dielman etc etc ("house work in the morning, sex work in the evening") and my dumb game brain immediately started putting together game mechanics, levels, art.

Concussion: Instantly forgettable preachy sports bollocks
There are two reasons, and two reasons alone how Concussion, got its name:
1) It’s an instantly forgettable movie
2) It so heavily and relentlessly beats you over the head with its sanctimonious message that you will actually suffer brain damage from watching this God awful film.
So Concussion is the real life story of Dr Bennet Omalu who made the ground breaking discovery that people who make a living bashing their heads in will someday get a squiffy brain. It stars Will Smith doing his best African accent, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as the offensively pointless love interest and Alec Baldwin as Alec Baldwin.
So why is this film shit?
Given the damning subject matter that the NFL is essentially condemning their precious players to a life of depression, dementia and early suicides you would think they wanted to get their point across as effectively as possible. But no, instead Concussion’s message is muddied by bullshit Hollywood trite that distances the film so far from reality you just instantly dismiss what it’s trying to tell you.
Take for example Dr Omalu’s love interest, Prema Mutiso. Why the fuck is she in this film?
Is it to make Dr Omalu look good?
No, he’s introduced as a caring doctor so she’s not needed for that.
Is it to bring out his humanity?
No, he’s actually paying for the brain research out of his own pocket making him a pretty good human being.
Oh, so it must be to raise the stakes so he has something to care about and potentially loose?
NOPE, because he’s from Africa his immigration status can so easily be revoked - meaning he’ll get shipped back to Africa faster than a jet-ski on a tidal wave. Those are some pretty high stakes if you ask me.
So why is Prema in this film? It’s so she can make you, the audience, feel very sad and make the NFL look like big meanies. How do they do this? Why, she inevitably gets preggers and when Dr Magic becomes vocal about squiffy-brain-pox the NFL starts to make trouble for him and his wife by harassing and stalking them. They do this to such a degree that little Miss Plot-Device can’t take it and has a miscarriage. That’s right, in the logic of the film the NFL are pure-bred, evil baby-killers. Fuck it, why not go all in on it guys, why not make them baby-fuckers?! Yeah, the N in NFL could stand for NAMBLA. Or why not make them Nazi baby-fuckers, that’s starts with an N too. Slap some swastikas on those pitchforks boys, we're going lynching after we vote Trump!
Oh and Prema also got raped when she first came to America because that's REALLY sad and she needed some aspect to her character other than basic-line-delivery-mechanism-type-female and baby loser \ pooper, right guys?! JESUS CHRIST! Do you realise how offensive that is?! How utterly transparent this lame, lazy tactic is?! Fuck you writer and director Peter Landesman, fuck you. This is a supposed to be a film about American Football players suffering from brain damage, right, not the trial and tribulations of Dr Omalu and co., yet at least a third of Concussion is dedicated to what is essentially an inane, cliché-as-fuck, bad Lifetime movie.
Just so you don’t get the wrong impression, I am not defending the NFL in anyway shape or form. While I find American Football so cataclysmically boring that doesn’t detract from the outrageous fact that the NFL are denying the damage concussions cause and as the movie continuously states, something needs to be done about it. But if anything Concussion has hindered it’s cause by its very existence.
Not only is Concussion bad, it’s laughably bad. By cramming offensive amounts of totally unwarranted mawkish sentimentality into a film that’s supposed to be about cover-ups they force the audience to write off the core message almost instantly. It also doesn’t help that they portray footballers as infallible warriors and untainted heroes that have been betrayed by the greediest of corporations. In Concussion, everything is either black or white, no grey area at all - well, except maybe the fucked up brains.
I’m going to sound like a complete hypocrite right now but I would have much rather have seen Aaron Sorkin’s take on this issue. He co-wrote the screenplay to Moneyball, a sports film about baseball and maths, one that on paper sounds like the single most boring film since the 4 hour extended edition of the History of Beige. However, Moneyball was incredible engaging and captured my attention about something I normally wouldn’t give two shits about. In order for Concussion to get its point across as effectively as the issue warrents, they needed someone like Sorkin to create believable characters and inject some complexity into a very real epidemic.
It can’t be all that bad though, right?
Well, it kinda is. Will Smith is alright (though apparently his accent is just a generic African accent and it’s quite offensive to say it’s Nigerian) though I can see why he wasn’t nominated for an Oscar when you see who else is in the running. Gugu Mbatha-Raw does the best she can with the abysmal character she has been lumbered with and everyone else is just, well, there.
Admittedly, the opening scene in the court room with Dr Omalu delivering his expert opinion in a murder trial was genuinely well written and I just wished I could have seen more of that instead of the complete and utter shit that was Concussion.
So is Concussion worth watching?
Nope. Not only does Concussion fail to deliver its key point it’s also such a bad, boring, predictable film from the get go. Don’t bother watching Concussion if you want to know about the NFL or chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), just read the original article here as it gives you all the information you need to know, minus the Lifetime movie bullshit.
