The Teacher named them both Galvani and Volta, those first two children born on the storm. They were names taken from books of science, The Teacher had said, and they were the most important names there ever were. The community’s entire existence could be owed to a pair named Galvani and Volta.

It was her twentieth storm, and the girl’s sandaled feet trudged through the dry, sterile dirt of the surface world. Her shoulders were crushed by the weight of the rod loaded to her back, her face already blasted by sand. She had been known as a Galvani her whole life, and here she was, struggling to fulfil her birthright. The Volta nearby walked in stark contrast. Vicious in his resolve. Stiff backed, tight lipped, eyes the size of pin pricks locked on the storm — a gurgling mass of black cloud that now lined the horizon.
