[ 𝐆𝐀𝐙𝐄 ] ― sender and receiver lock eyes across the room ( imelda? )
〈 ❀ *〉 ┊ She catches the other’s look with heavy-lidded gaze, painted lips curling into a beguiling little smile. Though already deep in conversation with her publicist, Imelda holds the stranger’s gaze for a few more seconds, that smile widening imperceptibly with the passing second. The din of socializing swallows up the words exchanged between the two, though their topic seems to have made an abrupt change. The author makes a subtle gesture towards the other woman, and after a brief glance over and an even briefer nod, Imelda’s publicist steps away and melts into the crowd.
Imelda is at Elowyn’s side in the blink of an eye despite having to weave her way through the mingling gala guests. The scent of pine and tilled earth and something unworldly suddenly blots out the formerly overpowering smell of potpourri, and the multitude of mixed voices suppresses itself to a much more tolerable volume. Seemingly unaware of the minute shift in atmosphere, Imelda extends both hands to gently grasp Elowyn’s.
“I finally get to meet my godsend in person.” The author’s smile lights her whole face with genuine warmth and gratitude as she speaks. Her tone lowers a tad, taking on the same cadence and care one would speak with when talking to a dear friend. “I’m so very glad you could make it tonight, Miss Taylor. Classical fiction is a new foray for me. I’m sure I would have been pulling my own hair out still stuck on the first draft were it not for the expertise you so generously lent.” Her head tips back slightly as she laughs a rich, velveteen laugh, allowing a glimpse for what look to be fangs-- but could surely just be a trick of the ambient lighting.
She lets her hands fall away from Elowyn’s, one resting at her side and the other pressing against satin-covered chest. The absence of contact crackles and fizzes, an invisible force of void implying that something has just been irrevocably lost. “Oh, but look at me, making this about myself. This release event must be getting to my head already.” A disappointed little sigh breezes past cupid lips, and her eyebrows knit in apology. “How was the work for you? I hope it wasn’t a stressful commission to handle on top of any other responsibilities you have.”
