What to Expect at The Interview
The day had come. There was nothing that prepared me for interview day. Turns out, it was a more relaxed setting.Finding the room was easy and when I opened the door I was surprised to see a group of women sitting in chairs. I found a set and we waited for...anything. I noticed what people were wearing. There were many khaki pants and blouses, but I wore a white, long sleeved button up and navy blue dress pants. It seems like business casual is a safe bet. It wasn’t long before the two veterinary technicians who run the program came in followed shortly by the DVM to give us a run down of the program and answer questions. They then divided our application into three groups and had us met with them one-on-one. The meeting was to go over any areas that may be lacking in our application and to answer any further questions. When the meeting was done, we were released to go about our day. There was no need for me to stress so much about my outfit and the interview overall. It went well and I hope to hear about an acceptance later.
My Name in Black & White
One week and three days is the time I waiting to get a response. I knew the next process was an interview, but you have to be selected to do so. I received my invitation through the mail and I have a co-worker who is pursuing this program who did not hear a word. No letter. No email. I almost felt guilty when I told him about my letter. We thought of any possibility for the missing letter. Perhaps the committee was going through applications alphabetically? Maybe his application was on hold due to it possibly being late? He took action and called them. It turns out, they did send him an invitation. His interview date and time frame were the same as mine. Do you know what that means? Carpool!!!!
Deadlines Are Important
I was so happy to be mailing my application. The school’s website has the deadline date for any and all applications. I had plenty of time to send it, but somehow I ended up sending it the day before. I paid about 11 dollars for next day shipping. It was agonizing. I could have had everything I needed in this packet and ready to ship sooner, but I procrastinated. My application lacked proof of insurance, but I typed a small letter noting I was pending through work in regards to insurance. Luckily, despite my shortcoming, it did not hurt my chances at an interview (I will post about later). All I can say is Ladies and Gentlemen, meet any and all future deadlines with time to spare.

Application Requirements
Below are the requirements to apply to Jefferson State Vet-Tech Program. Jefferson State Community College is the only accredited program in the state of Alabama. People will drive hours to make it to orientations and when asked. I hope that wherever you’re from, that they provide you with a clear outline as this one. It may seem like a lot, but it can be done. I took all the basic required courses close to home. I put in bold the route I took.
Vet Tech General Education Requirements
BIO 103: Principles of Biology 1; 4 hours
ENG 101: English Composition 1; 3 hours
MTH 116: Mathematical Applications; 3 hours
MTH 116: preferred but any MTH 100 or above will be accepted
CIS 146: Basic Computer Elective; 3 hours
CIS 146 preferred but any 3 hour computer elective will be accepted
Social and Behavioral Science Elective; 3 hours
PSY 200: General Psychology is preferred but any ASOC 3 hour elective accepted
Humanities/Fine Arts Elective: 3 hours
SPH 107 or SPH 106 (public speaking/ oral communications class); 3 hours
ENG 102: English Composition II; 3 hours may be substituted for the 3 hour Speech Elective
Applicants can have no less than a grade of “C” on any required general education courses.
The additional admissions requirements are just as important. I went from volunteering at a clinic every Friday since May 2016 through December that year. I made the leap to becoming a full-time employee that same December because I wanted more responsibilities at the clinic. I worked hard and cleaned every mess in front of me, but as a volunteer there’s a hesitation in allowing me to care for the animals. I couldn't aid in treatments, radiology, and other tasks involving the patient’s care. I was hesitant about big change, but now I’m able to learn so much even before school starts.
Additional Admissions Requirements
Applicants must have a minimum of 360 hours of practical experience prior to the term in which they are applying to start the Veterinary Technology Program. Practical experience must be under the supervision of a veterinarian in either a volunteer or paid capacity.
Applicants must apply and be admitted to Jefferson State Community College or currently enrolled students must be in good standing with the college.
Applicants must apply to the Veterinary Technology Program by deadlines found on the website.
Veterinary Technology applications should be accompanied by two letters of recommendation (one of these letters must be from a veterinarian).
Applicants must provide proof of health insurance.
Applicants meeting all Admissions Criteria will be invited for an interview with the Program Admissions Committee shortly after the Application Deadline. Interviews are held on the Jefferson State Community College Main Campus
Accepted students are required to attend a mandatory orientation for Veterinary Technology. Orientation is held on the Jefferson State Community College Main Campus
Accepted students are required to work or volunteer at an approved veterinary clinic 20 hours per week while enrolled in the program
LVT. Licensed Veterinarian Technician. There is a privilege that is earned when one receives their license. At an orientation (I will post about later) I was given a bit of information as to what will be expected of me, or better, what it is that an LVT does. I grew really excited when they mentioned LVT’s can perform skin sutures, so I asked for more info. I was told I could find more by searching Alabama Practice Act. It worked! Found in the form of a PDF, Alabama veterinary practice act details what an LVT can and can’t do. Scroll down to page 26-30 to find all the goods. Read up and get to know what you are legally able to do.
I think my big, goofy smile says it all... but I put in 4.5 hours at the humane society today and it was probably the most amazing thing I've done in a long time. Even if it was just laundry, dishes, cleaning litter boxes and filling Kongs with peanut butter, I had a blast. Only .5 more hours to go until I can take classes to work with the animals. Plan on working on that next week! #adoptdontshop #hshc #futurevettech (at Humane Society for Hamilton County (Indiana))
