hopping around grasshopper 06.11.2015
so i was falsely under the impression that grasshopper was a rendering software, i was wrong. in fact the lecturer cleared up that misconception pretty swift, it is actually a scripting software.
so we started with a “basic” model (quotation marks as we thought that was complex enough) - learning the basic of how many commands, where to find commands i.e. if you have a pre-existing command you’ve downloaded where to find it
hint: ctrl + alt + hold click the command
we followed the pre-set up command groups, to create what i am calling a blob like snail tunnel (?) by setting up the curves, linking them to functions like divide, curve, line, etc. and finally we lofted the curve.
hint: check command has preview on / is enabled
hint: work sequentially - visualise every step and ask what do i want to do and to what do i want to do it to?
so initially it was setting up the properties so that the two curves interact, then creating lines between them, those lines then gained an z value to give the tunnel height, we then learnt the difference between a 3-point arc and a biarc, finally we lofted the blog slug tunnel.
hint: biarc > 3 point arc when possible
hint: loft as two polylines or two separate entities and join when possible
second task to create morphed tongue like tower, the basic principle of this is to create the three elipses, a central spine and rail connect around these to create the shape.
now this involved a lot of crazy confusing connections, and it was all very fast paced but basically we set up the base elipse and copied this to create a top elipse with a rotation, then we set up a middle elipse that rotated in relation to the top elipse and kept within proportion to the base elipse. there was a lot of “the rotate connects to the slider... the slider connects to the evaluate”, etc. as you can imagine.
at this point in time i currently have half a tower, i was doing so well and following and understanding up until that point! which is a bit frustrating! but i’m going to have a cup of tea and try to get the top of that tower completed! and maybe make a swanky facade on it... time, sleep and patience dependent.
i did thoroughly enjoy learning grasshopper and i found it easier to understand than i had originally anticipated. whilst i’m not currently sure how i would apply it to my own project, i definitely would like to develop this skill and experiment with it, i may go and find some youtube videos they usually help me understand how to use software better than written instructions.
but hey i had a grasshopper session and i liked it! (and understood it).
