[not ausj] I was wondering how you feel about recordings of your fiction being read aloud. Is this something that exists? Would you like it to exist? Would you mind it existing? Would it be all right if I posted such recordings (crediting and linking to the originals), or just sent them privately to a few friends, or would you rather I didn't at all? (Not a preference you could easily enforce, but one I would honor.)
This has happened once to my knowledge: podcast of âEarthficâ. Itâs voice-acted and everything (although I had intended âLanieâ to rhyme with ârainyâ despite being derived from a longer name in which it does not sound like that). Somebody once asked about producing a recording of Luminosity but I was pretty lukewarm on a first-person novel with a female protagonist being narrated by a dude and he decided not to do it even though I would have let him (Iâm not sure what level of enthusiasm he was holding out for). Iâve submitted things to PodCastle and its sister publications, since thatâs pretty low-effort, but theyâve rejected me every time.
All of my non-fanfiction, solo-authored work is covered under a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA license. (My fanfiction hides in a legal gray area, but as far as Iâm concerned you can treat it identically, I just donât license it that way because of the Mighty Disclaimer Gods. My non-solo work varies depending on the co-author; Elcenia is under the same CC license, glowfic may generally be assumed to be friendly to derivative work and is typically pretty fanfictional anyway but consult coauthors for specifics.)
How much I would like more recordings to exist depends on things like âare you a dude, planning on narrating a first-person novel with a female protagonistâ. But if you are planning to attribute the original text to me (with directions to it), and not make money, and place a similar license on your recording, you have my explicit blessing regardless of whether you can acquire my explicit enthusiasm. If you wish to make money or use a different license-form, we would need to talk about that. In order to preserve the interlinked webness of the web, do please let me know if anything like this becomes publicly available so I can place a note about it on the page for whatever youâre recording.
