An Incredible film. Not for the faint of heart.
I still have not seen the original (SHUT UP, DON'T JUDGE ME. I'll let ya know when I finally see it).
This movie is f**ked up, man. Incredible performances though.
*SPOILER ALERT: READ THIS NEXT PART AFTER YOU'VE SEEN THE MOVIE. SERIOUSLY DON'T SPOIL IT FOR YOURSELF*
..So, it took me the longest time to realize the significance of this film and the vast intelligence of the creator of this one. For the longest time I was like, "What the f**k was that dialogue about in the boat in the end, and what was up with the final shot of the film (in addition to the foreshadowing of the antagonist "breaking the fourth wall" of the film)?"
..It took me the longest time to realize why he was smiling in the end while staring into the lens..
..It's because he is self-aware that he is in a movie. He's a completely self-aware individual who understands the totality of his existence as a character in a fictional story, but he is intellectualizing his existence with his accomplice along the way. He knows he is in a fiction.
I did not put too much thought into this one because it's such a bleak film. It wasn't until I was probably in my late 30's was when I revisited the picture and finally had pieced it all together (again I did not like to watch this one too many times because it's not really the best vibe if you're trying to NOT see upsetting things).
I don't know much about the original other than this film is a shot-for-shot remake of the original made by the same Director (obviously in America, not Germany, duh).
I'm totally going to check out the original film one day, but I felt like this one deserved a good mention. A solid film that will definitely flip your lid. 11 out of 10. Incredible writing. A very smart picture.
