I know it's been a fairly long time since I finally threw in the towel on that old thing, but me and @full-moon-phoenix were discussing that whole thing where making Eclipsa and Toffee a thing would have solved a whole lot of problems with the story.
...and that actually gave us enough inspiration to start thinking about trying again with the rewrite.
It has everything.
A chance to give the two most lore important yet underwritten characters in the show an excuse to stay in the foreground that gives them both more to work with!
More opportunities for a stronger conflict that ties together the plot lines about Mewni, the monsters, the queens, and the magic!
Ship drama that actually matters to the narrative!

Girls Night: Poor Ludo
Whatâs this headcanon that monsters knew magic back then?!
Thatâs a reference to the AU/rewrite - in Girls Night AU, one of the backstory elements is that monsters and Mewmans both knew magic - everyone did, it was just royals were the most powerful and knew the most secrets - but when âThe Evil Queenâ was dethroned and she and her family disposed of, something happened and monsters lost the ability to use magic.
In the rewrite, this is part of Ludoâs motivation - heâs heard rumors that monsters knew magic once and had it taken away, he wants it back (though just for himself).
