A Sad Goodbye
As the spring dance rehearsal season begins, so too do the retirements of geimaiko who won't be performing come performance time. The geiko who is leaving the gokagai now is Fukuyuri (ふく友梨) of Horiyae (堀八重) in Miyagawa Cho. However, not all is doom and gloom! Fukuyuri is leaving to pursue a higher education in university! We wish her the best in her studies ahead ^^

November 2018: Maiko Toshinana (Komaya Okiya) and Maiko Fukuyuri (Horiyae Okiya) of Miyagwacho during the Gion Kouta Festival.
The Gion Kouta Festival is held every year on the 23rd of November, and all kagai take place in rotation. During the event, two Maiko recite the Gion Kouta and offer flowers at a monument in Maruyama Park.
The Gion Kouta, the “Ballad of Gion”, is one of the most famous songs the Maiko and Geiko of Kyoto perform, and it’s the first song they learn. It describes the beauty of the Gion district. It was composed by the 4th head of the Inoue Dance School of Gion Kobu, Yachiyo Inoue IV, who came up with the melody while cleaning.

January 26th, 2023: Congratulations to Kyoto’s newest geiko! Fukuyuri (ふく友利) of Horiyae (堀八重) in Miyagawa Cho is celebrating her erikae! She is the first imōto of Fukuai (ふく愛) to reach the milestone and is looking absolutely stunning! Her outfit features pine and waves with a matching golden obi of pine ^^ おめでとうさんどすふく友利さん ^o^! August 2018: Maiko Fukuya (Kawayoshi Okiya) of Miyagawacho running into Maiko Fukuyuri (Horiyae Okiya) on her way to an early-afternoon engagement.
In the karyukai, it is mandatory that juniors greet their seniors first when they encounter them, and whenever they encounter them. Fukuyuri debuted 2 years and 3 months after Fukuya, so she had to greet her first.

March 2018: Maiko Fukuyuri (Horiyae Okiya) and Geiko Fumimari (Yoshifumi Okiya) of Miyagawacho showing off their kimono-ensembles at a banquet.
Fumimari is the most senior Geiko affiliated with the Yoshifumi Okiya, and was the onee-san to four of their Maiko, including Maiko Fumiyoshi. She had her Misedashi in 1998 and her Erikae in 2003, so she is 35 or 36 years old right now. She also belongs to the most senior Geiko of Miyagawacho who take part in stage performances.
