I started at 4pm, I started tidying some shelves as they looked a mess & my store manager said āleave the shelves as they donāt need attention, I want to you to be at the front & on shopfloorā I thought to myself āare you not seeing what Iām seeing?ā
When I came out onto shopfloor initially I was wearing my jumper & I started to get warm so went out the back & took it off, about 10 mins later I got cold so went to put it back on (I feel the cold easily) and as I was going back on shopfloor my manager was coming out the back & he snapped ā youāre supposed to be out the front, not skiving out the backā so I just said āI was just putting my jumper onā & walked off up the front of the store
I then started wandering round the shop as well as the front of the store, now I find it very difficult to engage in conversation with people unless they talk to me first. It doesnāt help that I suffer depression & anxiety. I also had a thumping headache. So I was just walking on shopfloor by people but not talking to them, I do look & smile at them.
Anyway as I was walking the shopfloor the bell started ringing for tills, I ignored it as the previous shift I had been on tills (which I hate with a passion) so carried on walking around & facing up a few bits that were messy. Plus a co worker was right in front of the tills as my manager was pressing the button but he didnāt jump on
After my manager finished on tills he came over & asked ādo you know what the bell means?ā
He then said āit means we need help at the tills, your on a 12 week trial period & all your doing is walking round staring into space, ignoring customers & looking at the shelves, so far Iām not impressedā
I wasn't impressed with his attitude either
Off he went, I thought to myself āwell youāre not morning at my supervisor colleague who was right in front of the till as the bell was being pressed, why just moan at me?ā
My anxiety plays a big part into why I donāt find it easy to approach people & ask them if they need help plus Iām still learning & donāt know about a lot of things that they ask about anyway plus I have no confidence
A little while later a woman came up & said āIām looking for the aloe Vera gel, itās Ā£3.99 but I canāt see any over thereā so I went over to where I was & said āit would be here but I canāt see any, Iām still trying so not sureā she then rudely said āIāll wait for someone whos been here a while and knows what theyāre doingā so I just turned & walked away, I thought āhow rude, the way it was saidā as I did she said normally āshall I ask at the till?ā So I said āyeahā without even turning round
A while after that a bloke came in asking about sleeping tablets so I took him to where they were & he asked what would be the best one so I explained āthey are here but Iām still in training so not sureā. He then said ādo I ask at the till?ā So I said āyesā then he started ignoring me so I walked back to the front of the shop
I was jumping on & off tills throughout my shift, I got my first rewards card sign up too & I know my manager wonāt think itās a big deal but to me it made me feel good
One thing that really annoys me is that everyone normally asks "is it contactless?" For the card machines, now as they are "regulars" you would think they know that we haven't updated our systems to it yet Also does my head in when I scan 2 or 3 small carriable items which could either go in pockets or a handbag/shoulder bag & then they ask "can I have a bag?"
