Ghost Columns and Transparency by For This World Is Hollow and These Hands Have Touched The Sky Review.

Ok. So first off, I’ve never been fond of this band due to seriously poor quality recording which were inaudible and just messy to me. I always thought that were probably great at what they do, however I just couldn’t hear it. If there’s one thing I’ve never really understood it’s being too lo-fi. By “too lo-fi” I mean just so awfully recorded that you can’t hear what is going and you certainly can’t get an feel for the music. This is coming from somebody that loves Screamo/Skramz bands such as Boy Problems and Welcome The Plague Year who don’t exactly have fantastic recordings but I digress.

When I first saw that “For This World Is Hollow And These Hands Have Touched The Sky…” ,which I shall shorten to FTWIHATHHTTS for this review, had put up a new track I wasn’t too excited. I clicked on the link to Bandcamp and found a song called “October Foxes”. Now I never thought I’d think a FTWIHATHHTTS was catchy, which this one certainly is. However I’ll talk about that track later on in the review.

This release, Ghost Columns and Transparency, starts with a skatty guitar tone playing a minor riff. Seems pretty standard, right? However it as the other members of the band start kicking in that their full form kicks in. Amazing, harsh and emotional vocals kick in, on top of the guitar then the bass and drums. Oh the bass and drums. How they give this record such a kick and boost, along with the gangshout to kick off this first, short, but fantastic track.

The next couple of songs “March, Hares” and “The Devil, The Deceiver” are so emotional and full of power. The latter track has the most interesting riff to start it off, almost like a latin style riff, but then the great power and tightness of the drums and bass come in to fill this out. That is one thing I have never thought about this album, through my many listens, is that it’s so tight and professional and I feel it is a huge leap away from earlier recordings by a long shot.

Then the second to last track “Stolen Trees” has perhaps one of my favourites on the album, starting off with a great fast paced jolty octave chord riff and the shout of “You take and you take and you take but you have nothing to give. Your bones in the ground are the only sign you've ever lived.” this track is a haven of short blast beats and slow droney guitar for fans of City Of Caterpillar for sure, except remember when you’re listening to COC and you just want the build up to end? This is just full throttle and there’s no waiting around for anyone.

Now back to “October Foxes”, the final track on this release. It sure is a fine one, and the one that got me excited for this release in the first place. Again slow guitar with a short build up to a fast octave riff with incredible vocals over which almost acts as a fill into my favourite 22 seconds of the release. It’s a ¾ part which is just incredible; it’s basically a Skramz waltz. However after that finishes, it doesn’t drop down to average, it carries on it’s marvellous vibe with all instruments dropping out and their vocalist screaming, “Even the ashes too, “Because you asked me to””. With one last onslaught the record comes sadly to a close.

For me, this is one of the most interesting and greatly put together Skramz records to come out, such a great mix of elements and never gets stale, it’s definitely up there with Vowel’s “All The Sad Songs” as one of my favourites. I love this record and hope to see them live soon and hopefully that’s where the record will come alive even more. This is a fantastic Screamo record from the South Coast 4-piece that everybody into heavy music should listen to. Intense stuff.
