#FromTheSidelines: Totally worth the 4:45am wake up alarm and the 45 minute drive each way to Newnans Lake in Gainesville, to be able to go out on the water with the UF Women’s Crew team for their Saturday sunrise practice. The team is not just impressive in their work ethic and dedication (their season goes from Labor Day to Memorial Day) but the fact they are considered a “club” sport at UF but compete against Division I teams and come away with not only wins, but championships and titles. The “Gator Standard” of producing championship teams is well represented by this group of talented, focused athletes. They’d like nothing more than to get that long-sought-after Division I classification. (#FromTheSidelines: When I was heading out of Gainesville after finishing up some work Friday afternoon, I had to stop by McKethan Stadium (that’s The Mac in the first photo). Not just because as an alum I like to see it, or because it’s one of my favorite ballparks, but also because time is running out on being able to get photos of the ballpark. While the Gator Baseball program has been part of the university since 1912, Alfred A. McKethan Stadium at Perry Field opened its gates for the first time in 1988. As the program has grown bigger and had many successful seasons, the ballpark has expanded. But the time came to set its sights on an even bigger facility that could serve the needs of the top-ranked team and the thousands of fans that attend its games each season. And so construction on the new Florida Ballpark began, with expected completion in June 2020 and the first season expected in 2021, making this the last season for the team at The Mac (the second photo is the Florida Ballpark currently under construction) While I know the new ballpark will be phenomenal for the team and fans, I have a soft spot for The Mac, and I want to try to capture moments there that will be a reminder of the program’s roots and history long after the ballpark is torn down, and future generations only know of it by name.
