Jazz was twenty-two when it happened. Worse, she didn’t even know about it.
Danny showed up on the doorstep to her apartment with terrified eyes and his heart in his hands. She ushered him inside quickly and put a mug of tea in his hands.
“Ellie destabilized,” he said bluntly. Jazz felt her heart fall out through her stomach. “She’s okay! She’s still… Not alive, but she exists. She’s just a core right now.”
Jazz processed.
She took a sip of her tea.
Danny had shown up in person to tell her this. It was… unusually considerate for him. Which meant someone else had told him to do that. Normally that was Jazz’s job.
Other people were strategizing on how to break this news to her. There had to be a reason for that. Terrible as it was to say, especially right now, none of them had been particularly close to Ellie.
She wandered. Never stayed in one place long enough to put down roots.
There was something more to this that Danny wasn’t saying.
“Where is her core now?” Jazz asked.
“In a Far Frozen medical center,” he said. “But that’s… temporary.”
“Is she expected to emerge soon?”
“Not… soon.”
“Danny. What aren’t you saying?”
He looked at her, sheepish and afraid and so carefully hopefully. “Someone needs to incubate her core.”
Jazz took another sip of her tea. Herbal. It was supposed to be calming.
“Would a human even work for that?” she asked. “Doesn’t Ellie need… a ghost?”
“I asked Frostbite about that,” he said. “Ellie’s a halfa, you know. A neverborn halfa.”
She waited.
“It’s what caused her to destabilize, apparently. She isn’t exactly half-and-half alive and dead, not like me and Vlad are.”
“Vlad and I,” she corrected absently.
“Right,” he said. “So, she’s a neverborn halfa, she’s basically like three quarters dead. But still a halfa. Still part human.”
“She needs a human… incubator. Is what you’re saying.”
“I wouldn’t call… Jazz. I hope you know that I respect you. And women. In general. I—”
“Stop,” she said. He snapped his mouth shut. “So she needs a human. That will stabilize her?”
“Not… exactly.”
“So I would do all this and she would just melt again?” she asked. “What’s the actual plan here, Danny?”
“She needs to be stabilized with human DNA,” he said. “Because she’s a neverborn. It’ll bring her back to equilibrium.”
Jazz nodded. “That’s why she needs a human.”
“Not quite.”
She narrowed her eyes.
Danny laughed nervously. “Okay, so her core would basically be the egg, right? Your DNA isn’t gonna be needed. Because the… female element is already there.”
He stopped talking then and took a big gulp of his tea.
If the core was acting as an egg, then that means the extra DNA would have to come from…
“Danny,” she said. “Will she even be the same person?”
“Yes!” he said quickly. “Yes, her core will stay the same, she’ll just look a little different when she comes out. But her core-- her soul-- is fine. She just needs… a new body.”
“So I would be building her a new body,” she said. “A new, more human body. With… someone.”
“That part’s up to you.”
She nodded. It had damn well better be.
“When she emerges from her core,” she said. “She’ll be a newborn? Will she remember anything?”
“Frostbite doesn’t know. She’s the first neverborn halfa in all of recorded history. Even regular halfas-- none of us have ever had to retreat into our cores before.”
“Is this safe?”
“I mean. She’ll definitely come out baby-sized. It’s her memories that we don’t know anything about.”
Jazz nodded.
Would it be the worst thing in the world, if Ellie lost her memories? Her early life had all been unrelenting trauma. She had only existed for six years in the first place, and she had spent all of that time as a homeless, unaging twelve-year-old.
She would miss her memories of her travels. Jazz hoped she got to keep them.
She would have to take her on lots of trips.
“Will she be able to grow up? This time?”
“Yeah.” Danny smiled softly. “’Cause she’d be restarting, her aging process would be, like, reset. Clean slate. Just like a regular halfa’s.”
“She wouldn’t be neverborn anymore.”
“No,” he agreed. “You would give birth to a living baby girl.”
She thought about it.
They hadn’t been close.
They were siblings. Ellie was her sister, no matter how close or distant she had been.
She would do this in a heartbeat for Danny, she thought guiltily. And then she mentally chided herself for allowing guilt to influence her decision making process.
Ugh.
Her guilt was irrelevant. She wasn’t going to just let Ellie die.
The decision had been made the second Danny walked in here.
