The Rat Race

I saw the show called rat race by Frolicked at Beverley puppets festival. Unfortunately, I didn’t get any Photos or video of the performance, however I have found this video on Vimeo which I’ve shared and Tumblr. I found this hand puppet show particularly interesting and clever performance. Enjoyed by all ages.

The children were entirely enthralled by the funny little rat characters as they re-enacted everyday situations in a comical manner. Attacking each other and beating each other up, similar to the style in Punch and Judy in in a way. Throughout the performance very little was said but the meaning behind it was very clear, too much dialogue and the children would soon have lost interest. However, adults could see the underlying message the children missed. The core of the story was very political in a way, the worker rats going about the in a mundane ritual of every day going to work and having a boss who treated them unfairly and horribly. With the rats in the end rebellion against the boss over powering him and blowing him up with fireworks. I’ve got a feeling many adults can relate to this feeling of being in a monotonous job and really wanting to blow their bosses up to.

I think Frolicked have done a fantastic job of taking this political and very grown-up matter and making it enjoyable for all ages with underlying meaning still intact.
