How smug you look, monster.

Alright, I finally finished Frogmonster, and even made a few run on the boss rush mod.

In this FPS, you are a frog-like homonculi created by one of the "god-birds" of this world, Melora, to fight the creation of her brother Runi. You start with a wood gun (infinite ammo), but quickly increase the size of your arsenal : shotgun, bow, flamethrower, etc..

What become quickly obvious about Frogmonster is that there is a lot of attention to details. It's clearly something the creator was passionate about and made with care.

For the player fantasy, so much of this game pass through the fantasy of being a frog (if you were into this) : you interact with the world by grabbing objects with your tongue, your equipment isn't from items, but from various "bugs" you can swallow whole on the way, etc...

Then, there's the enemies. They are both very diverse and detailed, boss or mooks. Even the simpler ones have a little spice added to it, be it in their presentation, movement or mechanics that make them feel fresh. A giant rat boss could have been a boring fight, but when it prowl on the walls of a labyrinth, it become another experience. Giant fish boss? How about giant fish dead body moved by a bunch of scavengers!

And then, the visuals are pretty nice. The voxel style give a feeling of depth and density to the environment, making the world feel more full.

The only flaw of this game is that it's somewhat light on direction. The map is in broad strokes, which is fine usually because the areas are pretty linear each, but it's pretty hard, when you are stuck, to know where exactly you need to search. I lost a few hours running in circles because I found what would later be the boss rush room, but assumed it was gonna be what I'll use to continue the story.

Otherwise, it's a very good game, a tight experience that even manage to make the world feel full of depth without going too far in the lore.
