Happy Friggasday - Aurvandill Well here we are another Thor’s Day Frigga’s Day and another 20 min sketch of a Norse (and Germanic, sometimes Celtic) mythological character. This week it’s Aurvandill / Aurvandil / Earendel. "Luminous wanderer" or “The Brilliance” or “The Light of the Morning Star”. Aurvandil The Valiant. Husband of the sorceress Groa (Gefion) who Thor went ahead to get her to cast a spell to remove a ‘hone’ (whetstone) from his head. He was a frequent friend and companion of of Thors’ who travelled together often and sometimes wandered having adventures of his own. On one adventure Thor carried him out of Jotenheim and across the Elivigar in a basket to protect him from the cold. But his big toe(s) were exposed and got frostbite. Thor wanting to fit him in the basket and not have the damage spread, broke off his toe(s) and threw it (or them) in the sky where it (they) became bright star(s). When Thor went on ahead to Groa he distracted her while she was incanting the spell to remove the whetstone by telling her the good news that Aurvandil was soon to be home. This caused it to get stuck there permanently.
Aurvandil may have been luminous and valiant. But he forgot the first rule of adventuring. Bring warm socks. It also would’t hurt to have a towel.
