Shutting Down #npm IRC
The #npm channel on irc.freenode.net is being devoiced. That means: if you're not a moderator in the channel, you won't be able to post there. Instead, you'll be redirected to this message.
As an official communication channel, IRC is difficult for us to adequately moderate and maintain. A welcoming and compassionate npm community is important to us, and as a small team, moderating IRC effectively has proven very difficult. Since #npm is probably always going to be seen as an "official" npm venue, we cannot in good conscience continue to let it fall into disrepair.
Here are some much better places to seek help, guidance, and support, which are actively moderated and maintained, either by us or by others.
If you're experiencing service issues, check https://status.npmjs.org to see if it's a known issue being worked on.
npm.community is the best place to seek support. If you're in doubt, we're here to help. This is also the best place to report bugs and request features.
If that fails, you can reach out to [email protected] to talk to us about your npm problems.
You can hit us up on Twitter at @npm_support with questions, at @npm_hiring for recruitment updates, at @npmstatus for operational status updates, or at @npmjs with puns and wombat pictures.
package.community is a Discord chat server with channels dedicated to discussions of package management in general, as well as npm issues specifically.
WeAllJS is an open-invite Slack for all people in the JavaScript community. It has a very active npm channel.
StackOverflow has a very active community of JavaScript and npm users asking and answering questions.
/r/npm on Reddit is a place where people share cool modules they've written and ask questions about various things.
If you're really committed to using good old fashioned IRC, the #Node.js channel on irc.freenode.net is a good place to go for general purpose Node.js or JavaScript chat. And if you create an unofficial #npm channel, we won't stop you, but we also can't commit to helping you moderate it.

(Belated) Dream Journal 2017-03-20: CHAT BOTS!
I’ve been hanging out a lot on @unichrome‘s IRC channel, so it should come as no surprise that I had a dream about the chat channel. And I can think of nothing more thematically-appropriate than using actual transcripts from the chat to describe my dream. Here’s your voyeuristic look into my online chat:
<fish> I actually had a dream about something very similar to that last night <unichrome> oh? <fish> A new nick joined our channel in the dream <fish> They went by the name Naufcham <fish> We chatted for a while and eventually discovered that they were actually a computer program <fish> Not like a chatbot, but like a fully-realized textual incarnation of a human
You’re welcome to join us on #init3 on the freenode IRC server, but please don’t freak out if Naufcham joins the channel. We don’t want to offend our potential cyber overlord.

man the Freenode IRC thing is so funny like. In theory if some dipshit like Andrew Lee somehow took over Twitter or whatever it would be meaningful because there's only one Twitter but IRC users are unbelievably mobile and can replicate anything they want anywhere (tangentially related: this) so really all he bought is a domain name which points to a cesspit full of idlers, wannabe nazis and botnet C&C systems.
-- jess (jess@freenode/staff/jess): [Global Notice] Hi all. It feels like my moral responsibility to inform all users that administrative control of freenode and its user data will soon change hands, and I will be resigning from freenode staff effective immediately. It's been an honour to help you all.
hmm. well. I didn't think that was how freenode was going to end.
Of all platforms, IRC users have a much easier time picking up and moving elsewhere, they just have to point at new servers and buddy up with the IRCopsto resolve channel disputes. I wouldn't be surprised if freenode actually haemorrhages users enough to collapse in the next few weeks.

when the freenode takeover happened I made a call that in three weeks the network would fully implode (drop below 25% of the typical user population) and I was off by like three days.
在 netsplit 的統計上,Libera.Chat 已經超過 freenode 了

Libera.
Ha ha freenode appears to have just removed basically all registered nicks and channels — Matthew Garrett (@mjg59) June 15, 2021 這個自爆行為直接讓 Libera.Chat 大幅成長,超越了目前的 freenode: 出自「IRC Networks – Top 10 in the annual comparison」 netsplit.de 上的資料看起來是某個比較長時間的平均值,會需要再拉長一些時間才會反應出來。
