DPS came out in 1989. as a kid it was the only thing I saw that I related to (not knowing why I related to it or why I was so upset by the end) other than Brokeback Mountain, which I was forbidden to watch. I didn’t even know The Color Purple was gay until late high school. our options (as kids - and I was narrowly too young for The L Word) were queer coding or fanfic.Â
now, almost every show has a queer couple. there are a ton of gay movies. we had a gay blockbuster in love, Simon. Moonlight won best picture and had a happy ending! you do not understand how crushed I was that Brokeback Mountain lost best picture to Crash (and ofc I didn’t understand WHY I was crushed). there’s starting to be more and more trans rep played by actual trans actors! we still need more trans rep and wlw rep but we’re not invisible anymore.
