To be perfectly honest, Bowie did manage to achieve something during the 80's not many did, i.e. he survived the infamous bomb Absolute Beginners with his dignity intact. Not only did he do a fabulous titular track for the movie, he also stole the picture with his short role. Of course, him being cast meant he had to some pieces for this enterprise, though they escape the wrath that is taken upon Bowie's 80's, since they're great. Sure, they're pop, yet they soar at that assignment. I mean, he even did a cover of a celebrated Italian tune, which, I have to be truthful here, feels like the weakest of the songs for Absolute Beginners. Bowie's fine vocally, but the backing resembles a lounge band that got high on some strong sedatives.
