When somone actually comments on one of your posts and for once you donāt feel like youāre just talking to yourself through posting on tumbler, thanks! XD @framesonthewall
Thoughts on the term "mansplaining"? Gotta say explaining to someone something they already know... it's really not a thing unique to man.
I think the term may have a very limited relevance and usefullness - for example, if you use it Ā IN A PRIVATE CONVERSATION. So if I talked to a female friend and wanted to describe a certain kind of conversation with a man who I felt took a condescending stance just because I was a woman, I might use it as a shortcut.Ā
But even then, Iād still have to doubt my own perception, Iād have to ask myself whether I wasnāt overreacting. And you are absolutely right, itās not a thing unique to men, and itās also not unique to men interacting with women.
I mean, I could easily say, I have this colleague, who Andrew-splains the world to everyone, and a sister, who Wendy-splains everything about the educations system, and so on. Some people have this missionary zeal, you know. Or my friend who thought she had to tell me everything about animal health after Iād worked as a vetās assistant for year, Carol-splaining as she sometimes does.Ā
If I feel someone is patronizing or condescending, and I think I need to call him or her out on it, it would use these exact terms, notĀ āmansplainingā, especially because I want to avoid stepping into the sexism trap myself.
And using this term in a discussion to dismiss the opponentās arguments - no matter how often theyāve been refuted, no matter how stupid I think they are - is just an evasion tactic. Itās lazy. Itās dishonest, because itās not tackling the argument, it just says, I canāt be bothered to come up with a reply.Ā
So I donāt really like that term and it has no good equivalent in German anyway, so Iām even less likely to use it in real life conversation.
