Long before the world knew of names and sciences, there were the Ancients. The Ancients, beings of immersive powers and greater knowledge, placed their chips on the metaphorical tables, testing the new world.
Among them was Earth, ruler of the lands and grassy plans, everything the beings walked upon her domain. She had ruled since she had been created, always watching her creatures and leading them with a gentle, yet firm, hand.
On her right was the Sky, his might and valor known through the cosmos, as he had saved the Earth when they first spawned, although how he had done so was unclear to all but them. They coupled, and were inseparable, even with the great distance between them.
On her left was Vast, the being that hovered outside of her world and Sky's domain, a black abyss of pinpricks of light. Stars, Vast dubbed them, for they shimmered and shone, each blessed with a name only Vast seemed to know.
Across from her was Air, who tended to play messenger between herself and Sky often. Wind was at her command, a simple breath and the world was ravaged in twisters and cyclones, her power fearful. It was also delightful, cool breezes and gentle gusts reminding the world of the calmness of Air.
Beside Air was the fifth and final Ancient, that of the under. They had no name, and never claimed to want one for themself. They only wished to command the souls of the once-living beings of the world, and the multitude of horrors that lay dormant under Earth's land. No one was brave enough to say no.
Together, they created. Together, they raized. Together, they formed anew. Among them, a new generation grew and prospered on the land of Earth, controlling their powers and helping the mortals Earth called her own.
Yet Vast was alone with the stars, and in pain from constantly over-expanding to compensate for the sheer amount of domain he held. He could not continue on such a destructive path, lest Vast be no more.
Worried, the Earth Mother spoke of her plan to assist Vast, to help him. The rest of the Ancients believed it to be a sound plan, an idea to save Vast. Abruptly, Vast stood, shaking his head at the council of Ancients. He left them, his last words ringing in the chamber.
The pilot fish (Naucrates ductar) is a member of the trevally, or jackfish, family. It is a widely distributed fish, found in warm/tropical open seas.
It is known to follow ships, and many ancient people believed that it would navigate a ship towards its desired course.
Many are often found near sharks, rays, or sea turtles, eating ectoparasites (parasites that latch onto the skin of a host) and their larger companion’s leftovers.
Despite being seen with many other marine creatures, pilot fish appear to have a more mutualistic relationship with the white-tip reef shark in particular. It benefits them both because the fish is protected and the shark is free from parasites.
Younger or smaller pilot fish in particular are known to swim into sharks’ mouths to clean their teeth.
Fun facts:
It can temporarily change color when excited, with its black bands turning into a lighter blue or silvery shade.
The pilot fish’s name may have come from one of three things. They swam near ships when they were near ports and were believed to guide or “pilot” the captain towards them. They were also believed to lead sharks to their food and ships, whales, or swimmers to safety.
In Greek myth, a sailor named Pompilus helped a nymph Ocyrhoe flee from Apollo. He moved her to Samos and Apollo punished him by turning him into a fish.
Pancrates of Arcadia, a Greek poet, stated that it was a sacred fish to Poseidon and that a fisherman (called Epopeus) ate one and paid for it with his life.

This was a far more interesting one than the hickory shad. I especially liked the myths I read about it.

📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖
March 2039.
Since their residency ended in 2021 Dr Casey Ramsey and Dr Aurora Emery had being kicking all sorts of career goals. Casey was still the head of Diagnostics and the Naveen Banerji clinic and Aurora was the head of the Delores Hudson family and sexual health clinic that was located in one of the more disadvantaged areas of Boston. There were many times where both clinics joined forces with various health initiatives to get better health outcomes, not only for those who were disadvantaged economically but for those who were people of colour, those who identified as lgbtqi and other minorities who were misrepresented in low health outcomes.
By now Ethan had stood down as Chief, citing family reasons and was more than happy to work as an attending on Casey’s team. Ethan could not be any more proud of how Casey has gone in her career if he tried. He knew she had reservations early on in her career, being his Mentee did cast a shadow but she shone bright from the outset. Herself and Tobias worked well early on to maintain the team’s reputation and recruited well, they expanded into research and Casey was leading the team medically full time and this is when she fully shone. Sure there were naysayers, there always had been, especially after the attack when word of their relationship got out but many changed their tune after working with the team for which all were relieved.
Aurora had her own career shadow to deal with too, being the niece of Harper Emery, but she too worked hard not only to prove the naysayers wrong but to show she was a force in her own right.
Casey and Aurora worked well individually and together as a team, they were often invited to schools for Career day talks and to encourage more females and persons of colour into not only medicine but Sciences in general.
One day however, Casey had a thought. A thought to write another book. She had already co-authored a book with Ethan about the advocacy work she had done with women’s health. That book was a success. She met with Aurora to float her idea.
“All the talks we do to high school students are well and good but I think we can do better and write a book. Both of us have had to deal with the misogyny in the medical field, both overt and subtle. We have both had accusations of being favoured by Nepotism. I was thinking of writing a book of how we both overcame such obstacles and hope that it will encourage not only medical students to continue their studies but interns and residents to continue.”
“That does sound good, I would like to add a chapter about racism also.”
“Agreed,” said Casey, “I will let you write that the outcomes at the Delores Hudson clinic speak volumes to people who see people like themselves professionally.”
“Indeed, when you recommended me I was apprehensive but I did understand your reasoning and you are right, we have a diverse staff that reflects that area of Boston and I think it is why we have had the great results we have had.
Over the coming weeks Casey and Aurora met to plan their pitch to the publisher. Both felt it was a solid pitch but they are nervous. They have a meeting with the publisher and it is good news.
The publisher agreed to publish the book.
The next six months is a blur of research, writing, not to mention the demands of work and family but by the end there was a draft ready for editing. Over the next month it was edited and slight alterations made. Casey and Aurora decided to call the book Power to Overcome.
It is finally published and in December 2039, Power to Overcome was launched at Edenbrook Hospital. There was plenty of excitement, Professors from Harvard, Grossman, John Hopkins and Yale were all in attendance. Caroline Bloom and Naveen also came along for the launch also. Harper was very proud of both Casey and Aurora for not only what they had achieved but for writing about it. Both Ethan and Tobias were very proud of their colleagues also. The launch was a success and the new year brought about the publicity circuit for the book.
Both Aurora and Casey during the tour could not believe how well their book was received. On tour they had heard stories from many medical students and former residents who had dropped out or were thinking of dropping out because of the misogyny and racism but their book had inspired them to keep on going.
Power to Overcome became a best seller, this shocked but also pleased Casey and Aurora and not only did it have the desired effect of inspiring those in the medical and scientific fields but also those in other male dominated professions also and that was one outcome that Casey and Aurora did not expect and for that they were pleased.
Welcome to the Fourth installment of Fanfic of the Week, a somewhat weekly series where I talk about a fic I've read and why I adore it!
If anyone knows the Author’s tumblr handle, let me know, so I can tag them. If you are the author, and you want me to take it down, just shoot me a message, and I'll do it, no sweat! :)
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the

Rating: Teen
Author’s Summary: The youngest in Kakariko knows not to go near the fairy rings or follow the lights, but Malon didn’t grow up in Kakariko. She grew up on rolling plains dotted with marigolds, and the flowers remind her of home, so she bends down to pick some up.
"What are you doing, Miss...?" someone asks.
In other words, Malon meets a fae in the woods
Content Warnings: None so far, I think, but it looks like it might get a little bit darker before it’s finished.
Word Count: ~10k - Work in Progress, updates frequently
My Notes: HHGHHMGGH I love this fic!
First off, I very rarely see fics that are focused on Malon and from her point of view, and honestly, I think that’s a crime. She deserves more love and attention. Thankfully, It seems that she’s getting that from Time and the rest of the chain.
The aspect of this fic that focuses on her relationship with Time is so gd cute. (He gave her his cloak!! The bracelet!! Please, I am drowning in the fluff.) Protective Time!!! The way Twilight knows to go get him after that confrontation at Malon's house! Anyways, petition for Time to rain righteous retribution on Kohga’s head. Or for Malon to punch him in the face again. That would work too!
Speaking of protective characters- the way the older teens were ready to throw down when they came to find the four younger ones in chapter two. And then they see Malon, and they just go “Okay, this is acceptable.” I can imagine the rest of the boys pestering Time about his new “friend” later. All of them playing matchmaker was so cute too. It’s like they went: “Okay, we have to help him, the old man has no game.”
Also, the chain being family! It’s not stated if they’re all adopted, or biologically his kids, or whatever. (Other than Wind and Hyrule, who were saved from the Summer courts.) But I like that. Because it doesn't matter. They are acknowledged as his kids either way. The others are literally just straight up called Time’s sons, and Malon recognizes them as such. (The part where she says “You’ve raised some fine sons.” When I tell you I was wailing)
I like that you made Wind and Hyrule younger, around 10-12ish, I think. Younger than people usually make them. I don’t know if there’s going to be a reason for that, but it’s a nice touch.
Meet Funfetti! He loves to eat food and stores things in his stomach to regurgitate later (usually finds them on the floor). He also bites your ankles if you're not to his liking. I have cloned him in many different forms and they all reside in a dedicated shrine
FUNFETTI!!! Hello handsome. I have seen you around before and always appreciated the artistry in your clones. May you find the tastiest floor trinkets
