Presented at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York to launch GM’s 1955 Motorama, the GMC L'Universelle was a futuristic delivery van concept. In order to keep the loading deck low and unobstructed, the 287ci Pontiac V8 was mounted in a front/mid position, driving the front wheels. The folding gullwing doors were a standout feature. Though L'Universelle remained a one-off, it accurately predicted the dimensions, layout, and packaging of the minivans that became a staple of American car parks 30 years later.
