Oooooooooof, Meganium. Meganium, meganium, Meganium. You poor girl.
We love Meganium! She has a big pink flower! But there’s an elephant in the room. Or, more specific, a sultry litekll biinch named Bayleef. Bayleef looks SO cool, Ash had one in the ANIME, and it looks uncommonly complete for a second-stage starter pokémon. All of this leaves poor Meganium out in the cold, wilted and ready to just die on your windowsill. But we can fix her up! We can diverge her a little more from Bayleef, while also making her more in-line with her evolution line’s vibe and look a little more mature to boot!
She’s a dandelion bouquet! This has a few advantages; Chikorita has a necklace of seeds, Bayleef has a necklace of dank rolled weed leafs, so why should Meg have one big flower? Instead, she has a profusion of the dandelions, the other weed. I considered dropping the antennae (Bayleef’s big leaf is so cool) but I like how out-of-left-field they are. So we highlight them with the Grass-type spackle called ‘leaves’. She also gets a longer neck and tail to diverge from her prevos a bit more, while her nails get fused to match her prevos instead.
(I went with dandelions here because A] I like em and B] they’re more in the milieu of plants that the the rest of the line is playing with.)
(I noticed while sourcing art for this that the games are really inconsistent with how dark the green is for Meganium. This color works but in other art I would darken it significantly, again to make the progression of the line more stark.)
(Notably, here Meganium has lost all connections to, well, geraniums. There are less sensical names in the canon, but as a new alternative: Megandedon?)
