This is what MOOCs hope to do. "Flex Choice, which the school rolled out this year, enables students to earn free credit by taking fully automated online courses in general-education subjects and those related to their major at their own pace. The program uses computer simulations designed to test students' competency in various areas." The major catch is that these credits would only be as valuable as the "marketplace" of higher ed will allow. The Business degree is indeed becoming a commoditized degree, but how valuable will this degree actually be once students complete it? And will any other institution accept these credits if students change their minds about attending this one? I imagine the answer to the first is not very and the answer to the second is not very many. But that is only based on my experience as someone who has spent more than a decade teaching and advising students in higher ed: what do I know about the brave new world of crappy ed these fools have planned.
