At first glance, this battered copy of The Talisman, from an 1853 printing of the Waverley Novels series, looks quite plain. It does have nice marbled end papers, and gilt edges, but nothing else. If, however, you open the book and fan the pages just so, you'll make a wonderful discovery. There is an elegant little painting, concealed on the edge of the pages. This technique, known as fore-edge painting, was popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Curious readers may learn more about the practice from the Boston Public Library.
