An iconic East African duel rages on today! Askaris were native soldiers of East Africa recruited by the various factions of WWI. Some of their enlistment reasons may include a good pay, but rarely a specific allegiance to the country they were serving under.
On the left, an early war soldier from the Belgian Force Publique in a lighter weight uniform, an older version than the one commonly worn which is much more alike their enemies' uniform, surveys the field. His fez cover would normally be blue, but they quickly bleached in the sun.
On the right, a soldier from the German Schutztruppen as depicted on a propaganda postcard. These men, led by the brilliant General Von Lettow, were trained to drag battles on the African front out as long as possible to force the Allies to divert forces from the Western front.
