Winamp had been my music player for as long as I can remember, since about the time mp3s became popular (I remember when I first encountered mp2s and was amazed with their audio quality for their size).

I basically added all my music ever to one big playlist and put it on random. This wasn't that big of a problem.

Now, over a decade later, my music collection (not counting chiptune formats) is nearly 58 gigs and about four weeks long. Four weeks long. The playlist just keeps getting bigger.

Winamp has an option to organize my music, but unless I missed something, it didn't work the way I wanted. (Also, skins and the song repeat feature inexplicably don't work on my laptop.) However, during my brief time working in Linux, I noticed that Amarok (a Linux music player) had a feature where I could select a list of directories that contained music (and it would automatically include subdirectories) and it would periodically scan them for new files and allow me features like 'make a playlist of everything in your library'. As newly-downloaded music tends to be put in the same few folders, this seemed a useful and intuitive solution.

Trying to find a free music player that did this in Windows was a pain. Fortunately, I eventually found Foobar2000.
