Volumetric gradation with a single tool is perhaps one of the most demanding skills one exercises in a 15 minute rendering. I try to constrain myself to the specific tonal range of one piece of conté, without the ability to add white for highlights or a darker tone for shadows. It really forces you to appreciate the many values you can get out of a limited palette.
