With the entire city awash in uncertainty and fear, it can be difficult to maintain artistic focus and motivation. Looking into alternate means of instruction myself... I am facing new challenges while dealing with an unknown future. The Art Students League “ArtApart” initiative is a way for artists to stay connected and inspired in these uncertain times. Today’s prompt was “Unshaken”. I was busy dealing with domestic travails today, so I offer this old 8 minute sketch of a fireman I drew around the time of 9/11. He spoke as we sketched him and he struck me then as perhaps the most courageous and unshakeable man I’d ever met. I would like to think he is still out there, but I’ll never know. The final prompt for the @aslnyc “Art Apart” initiative... “UNITED”. Opted to use a single panel from my second story installment of “The Pugilist” in Heavy Metal Magazine, when the main protagonist consummates her bond to her mystical companion. This was a real labor for me at the time and my longest published story to date... so it has a double meaning for me aside from a hopeful image for the future of this shining city. Another last minute @aslnyc “Art Apart” entry to the prompt “Mask”. This image comes from a 1991 sketchbook filled with masked imagery that I was obsessed about at the time... from Pre-Columbian to Greek theater... and beyond. I was curiously preoccupied with masks in general at the time... perhaps because I hadn’t perfected my own yet:). This was done on paper with a matte medium ground, oils, India ink, and gold leaf.
