Beach Pajamas, The Fun Pants, Folkwear Version

Beach pajamas may be the first pants women wore in the US for fun and not out of necessity. They became popular in the 1930s for beach wear and they are still a lot of fun to wear now. I first made rayon beach pajamas from a vintage pattern from Folkwear and I wore them until the fabric gave out. The pattern boasts a graceful Bertha collar and a wrapped bodice. The big swirling pant legs are so large, they pass for a skirt. And the loose legs also mean they are plenty cool as the breeze circulates around the fabric easily. (Why, oh, why do young women wear skin-tight leggings all summer when they could be in cool summer dresses?). Stick with rayon or silk fabric because the collar will not drape well otherwise.

They are best hemmed as they are shown, a bit above the ankle, because with wide pant legs anything hemmed lower will be caught by your foot when taking the stairs and may trip you up. Take care to keep the v-neck from stretching out during handling; I often run a basting stitch, not a stay stitch, so I can draw it in as needed.
