I love Parental Royed, and I think that Roy did teach Ed some valuable life lessons (in a roundabout way). But what I mean is that Hughes gave Ed something that Roy was unable to do on most occasions; trust.

I know a lot of people like to interpret Ed as hating Roy’s guts, but if you look at like 99% of their interactions, it’s pretty obvious that Ed not only admires Roy, but wants to put his trust in him. But except for very few occasions, Roy doesn’t tell Ed things, either because he’s trying to spare his feelings and keep him a child for as long as possible, or because he doesn’t trust that Ed won’t do something reckless because of how emotional he is.

Whereas Hughes does tell Ed things he should know about, for better or worse. The best example of this being when he tells Ed that Scar was most likely the one who killed Nina.

A bit questionable considering Ed’s vengeance boner clearly went up hearing he might have found Nina’s killer? Hmm...possibly.

But it shows that Hughes trusts Ed enough to make the right decision when bringing Scar to justice.

Roy is a man who intends to do good, as do all of his team who are very loyal to him. Unfortunately, his choices, to join the military to make a difference, led him to Ishval where he participated in a genocide.

It’s interesting to think how Ishval was presented to people such as Roy - early in the series we hear Ed’s beliefs about the Ishval massacre just being a riot which the Ishvalan people started and the Military responded. What Ed doesn’t realise is that he was being fed military propaganda. Roy would’ve been receiving lies as well to motivate his actions. 

It’s perhaps a bit telling that it’s the murder of a pair of Amestrian doctors that were so clearly not monstrous enemies that really shook Roy. He has nightmares about the Ishvalans he’s killed as well but he was able to justify all his actions up to that point as just being in service to a greater cause and making a positive difference by quelling the rebellion. This act against two Amestrians helps him to realise that the whole thing was wrong and he couldn’t justify his actions any longer.

So he wants to make changes but and he believes that comes from remaining in the military to change it from within. But ultimately, he can’t make real change - the Ishvalans continue to be mistreated by the military and he’s forced to continue quelling their attempts at resistance. The situation in Liore really highlights how little has changed despite Roy’s great efforts.

Learning that the Fuhrer is a homunculus only confirms everything he feared - about how little power he has in his position despite the rank and respect. So he tries something new.

Admitting something to your loved ones was not easy.

I found it heart-warming that Ed finally found courage to admit his fear to Al.

Then, with the confirmation from Al, I felt that the burden in Ed’s heart had lessened a little and the bond between the brothers had become stronger.

Another one of my favourite was Hughes’s final farewell.

Death or alive, he always worried about the brothers.

Sadly, it seemed, Ed and Al did not realise that the feeling they had toward Hughes was not just for a dear friend but for a father.

She should have known this sooner. Winry knew it! If she didn't date a man, they would question her. They would ask her if she was alright and...oh god... She can just IMAGINE Pinako’s reaction. This was bad. Bad. How was she going to say this to Ed and Al? More importantly, how are they going to react? Her mind was all around the place. “Okay, Winry. Just say the two words and you’ll be done...right? No! Just think of something clever like throwing a bag of skittles- no, she’ll KILL me for that. Make a letter, maybe? She’ll understand.” ‘No, she won’t. No, she won’t. No, she won’t.’ Winry thought. “She’s going to kill me. She’s going to kill me. She’s going to kill me.” Winry laid on her bed in stress and covered her face with the pillow as she screamed in it. This was going to be bad...very bad...

‘Hi, Grandma. Um, this is going to be weird coming from ME but you know how I and Edward used to joke about me liking girls and you said: “Not my granddaughter.” He was...all the way correct. I like my gender. I don’t know why but I just do. Please don’t be mad. Don’t kick me out. -Winry.’ Winry laid her face on the desk. She let go of her pencil and looked at the letter. “Well, why don’t you just tell her?” Edward appeared behind her. She forgot he got much taller. “You read it?!” “Forget read. I heard you scream that you were gay. Very secretive there, chief.” Edward teased as he grabbed the letter from the desk. “Okay...I’m giving this to Pinako.” Edward walked off. She realized what he said. Edward KNEW that Winry was slow so by the time she got there, Pinako and Alphonse would have already seen the letter. “EDWARD! Don’t you DARE!” Winry almost fell trying to get to Edward. And she was right. By the time she got there, the letter was in Pinako’s hand. “Grandma, I’m so sorry! You see, I was writing that for a friend!” “Don’t fool me. The date and your name are on the paper, Winry.” “It’s okay, Winry. I accept you.” Alphonse goes to hug Winry. “I’m not mad at you but I am surprised that the little girl who was begging to get married to Edward is now in love with girls. But hey, it’s you.” Pinako’s words shocked Winry. Then again, her six-year-old self would have known this from the start. “So, you’re not mad at me?” “Believe it or not but your grandma used to have a little crush on a girl in primary school. Her name was Penelope.” “Do you still love her, grandma?” Winry asked. “I said was and used. She’s straight and dead.” Besides from Pinako’s crush being dead, Winry was happy that everyone approved. Even the old Pinako.

Happy spooktober everybody. Sadly this year fma 03 month has been delayed again, I apologize. It's going to take place in December.
