Evan was 13, a week, and three days when the discoloration finally appeared on his inner left forearm.
It takes over a decade, but they find each other eventually.

His legal name stares up at him when he moves aside his wristband; stark, black lines that could be one of his tattoos if he didn't know any better, spelling out that his soulmate is out there somewhere and she'll be calling him 'Evan', not 'Buck' or 'baby' or 'sweetheart'.
Buck doesn't really know anyone who calls him 'Evan' anymore. It's a shame, since that's what his soulmate is going to call him.
He likes having a nickname, though; he even calls himself 'Buck' when he meets new people.
Hey, whoa, wait. Why did he just introduce himself to Tommy as 'Evan', then?

There were more strings, it wasn’t just his and Maddie’s. There were a handful of yellow ones, more orange, a couple of blue, and a red. A deep, bright, ruby red. He loved the colour of it, spent so much time looking at it. He knew the person at the other end of it was the person he’d been wishing for, if only he could find them.
That string was always slack. He didn’t know where it led. Even as he travelled around the States, it didn’t move or point in one particular direction.
The closest he got was a brief twitch on his flight to Peru, but he hadn’t been paying attention to where they were flying. The screens blacked out right then as the captain made an announcement about turbulence, and by the time they came back on, he had no idea how far they had travelled from when the string had moved.

The sparrow was on the loft railing, watching the business of the busy and not-so-busy crew below. Buck watched it shuffle its feathers sporadically.
“It has to mean something, right?” he asked. He’d asked the same question an uncountable number of times.
“Not really,” said Ravi.
Tommy manifests a part of his soul as a bird in order to save Buck in an emergency; no one is particularly adept at interpreting this.

Tommy is on his porch when he feels it. Evan. He doesn't touch his soulmark anymore. Doesn't have the right, not after running away twice. He misses the comfort of pressing his hand against the wolf-shaped mark and getting the warm flood of feelings. Since Bobby died, Tommy has touched it a few times and been met with a deep grief. He doesn't pick up the phone. He is the worst soulmate ever. The universe promised him it would be okay, and he walked away anyway because it was too much.
He's not touching it now, but he feels it anyway. Anguish. Pain. Terror.
