False Memory OCD (FM-OCD*): a subtype of OCD where oneās obsessions center around doubt of oneās own memories. This typically means that the person with FM-OCD has intrusive thoughts and fears about having done something and not remembering it. Intrusive thoughts may even be whole imagined scenarios that are terrifying to the person with FM-OCD, and this only exacerbates the confusion and doubt the person has about their memory. As someone with this subtype I think that itās accurate to say that itās like your OCD is gaslighting you. It can also make a person more susceptible to suggestion through false allegations (āDid I really do that?ā); I actually acquired it after being gaslit so gaslighting and false allegations may be a reason some other people develop FM-OCD too. Common compulsions are mental review/repetitive thoughts about the supposed act, seeking evidence that they are innocent, seeking reassurance that they arenāt the type of person who could do such a thing, self-punishment for the imagined wrong, or even āconfessingā their intrusive thoughts (āI did something bad and I donāt remember doing itā). This particular subtype may be influenced by alcohol or any drug that causes memory loss/blurry memory- since thereās a gap where the individual with FM-OCD doesnāt remember well, their OCD will tell them that during that time they did something wrong/that they would never do sober.
